21. Plenty of good bad guy performances out there....
Alan Arkin in "Wait Until Dark."

Tom Berenger in "Platoon."

Robert Prosky in "Thief."

Al Pacino in "Godfather II"

Jack Palance in "Oklahoma Crude."

Anthony Hopkins in "Silence of the Lambs"

Barbara Stanwyck in "Double Indemnity."

Malcolm McDowell in "A Clockwork Orange."

John Huston in "Chinatown."

Robert De Niro in "Taxi Driver."

Laurence Olivier in "Marathon Man."

Dennis Hopper in "Blue Velvet."

James Cagney in "White Heat."

Plenty more. Playing the villain provides lots of opportunity to go over the top, chew the scenery a bit, without seeming out of character.

And, how could we forget: Ronald Reagan as "The President."

Edited on Sun Jun-13-04 12:40 AM by Parrcrow
Mitchum played an animal.
DeNiro played a monster.

Mitchum's version played better I thought because plausiblility was the hook that kept the audience engaged. Amoral is more plausible than evil.

38. You are absolutely correct
Edited on Sun Jun-13-04 12:45 AM by mitchum
DeNiro's characterization was that of a bug-eyed cartoon psycho, while Mitchum was menace in a Panama hat. Plausibility was the key.

63. Darth Vader in "The Empire Strikes Back"....
He was Peter Cushing's goon in "Star Wars" and a big softy in "Return of the Jedi", but in TESB, the character was a Lovecraftian god! The director--Kershner, I believe--captured him in the most majestic of poses and movements; James Earl Jones' voice even had a different tone than in the other two. And then there are his actions: strangling two officers to death; torturing Han; severing his son's hand.

"I am altering the deal, pray I don't alter it any further."
"Apology accepted, Captain Needa."
"Perhaps you think you're being treated unfairly?"
"No...I am your father!"

The definitive badass of film mythology.
