9. Damn Right!
This kick is for "Hit The Road, Jack." I forget what TV commercial it was used in, but the song made a BIG impression on my son when he was in the first grade. He would make me shut up whenever the spot came on, and he asked me who was singing it--so I told him the story of Ray Charles Robinson and he became MORE impressed. Wanted to know how a blind man could ever play the piano. "Quite well," I told him.

Some months later, it was announced that Ray would do a show at Robinson Center Music Hall, a NICE venue. Nothing would do Number One Son, but that we HAD to go! He nagged me for days until I bought tickets. I spent part of the show trying to stop him from standing on his seat and dancing, then gave up. He was only doing what most of the grownups WANTED to do that night!

Reagan couldn't carry Ray Charles's shades!

13. This morning...
Mr. Sleepyhead was watching Imus on TV (yuck - but he got to the remote first) and they played "Hit the Road Jack" and dedicated it to Reagan. HA!!!

We will miss you, Ray.

25. Great interview with Ray on Terry Gross yesterday from 1998
He talked about how he loved is mother--how she taught him everything, how to clean, wash his clothes, cook, take care of himself. He always packed his own suitcases much to the astonishment of other people.
He was extremely self-sufficient.

He did live in a school for the blind, but left at age 15. A friend of his mother's took him in and provided food, and clothing, a home and support for him. He worked in clubs, earning a little money. He tried to emulate Nat King Cole. Finally found his groove, and became successful, overcoming some drug and women problems. He sounded very sensible and grounded. A great man.

26. When is his memorial service?

I am so mad because I see next to nothing about this great man!

When is the Memorial, where will it be?
I visited his official website but they only had a picture of him and the birth and death dates.
