I need advice: I'm thinking of giving up my phone
I thinking of disconnecting my landline and just going all cell. I'm not a phone person and it seems silly to pay for both. Has anyone here done this? Do you regret it? Need info. Thanks!

1. I did it recently
And I do not regret it one bit.

I got a high-speed cable connection for my computer--which I love--and my cell phone works just fine at the house.

My suggestion is to make sure you know how many minutes you're going to need.

Also, when deciding on service providers, check to see which ones offer a "trial period". It would be terrible if you locked in with one provider based solely on price and then found out that you couldn't get a signal at your house. (I think Verizon has a 30-day trial, AT&T has 14 days.)

3. Thanks for the info
Yeah, a friend of mine got locked in and he had a poor signal at his house, he didn't care all that much because he kept his landline.

5. Great advice, MissMille...
The trial period is crucial. G_S will want to be sure the phone works at his/her main dwelling.

Other companies to research - Sprint, T-Mobile, Cingular.

Good luck.

2. What timing...
I just cancelled my land line and switched to a t-mobile cell phone as my only phone.

So far, three days, no problems.

A friend recently moved and didn't get a land line, just uses his cell phone.

If you can, I recommend researching the cell phone plans and contracts before you make a decision.

4. Security Of A Land Line
I have heard some people express concern over the availability of a cell phone during some disasters, storms, etc., but I don't know the facts that raised their concerns.

6. My land line was out for 2 weeks after a heavy rain...
this past winter. I went to a pay phone and reported the outage and the computerized message said (I kid you not) "We will call you on the day of the visit to confirm the appointment." How were they going to call my home phone, it wasn't WORKING!

9. It is funny...
I would be laughing, too. And I loved calling the land line company and canceling the service.

8. I have only had my cell phone for the last three years
If you get a 2 phone plan you can leave one at home (if you need to). I won't have another land line ever. My internet is through cable, so a home phone line is redundant.

10. 911 concerns
I don't have a cell phone (Yes, I'm a dinosaur, I know) but I read that one good thing about a land line is that 911 knows your address in case you can't speak or pass out before giving that info.

Just a thought.

13. Living in the suburbs doesn't protect you from anything.
Or are you speaking of getting attacked by Aliens?

12. No phone here, mostly

No cell phone ever, & use dial-up. Only plug phone in if I need to call out, but suppose I might if I were expecting an important call--it would have to be really important. Went without a phone for 12 years living aboard a sailboat--had to row ashore to a pay phone to make calls and check voicemail. Phones are bad for the blood pressure. It means anyone can disturb you at any time. I kinda like my personal space and privacy uninvaded. Phones are for the young, people with families, and business people.

15. many phones are now coming out with GPS technology
that 911 can access. They can pinpoint your exact location. My phone has that.

14. No regrets
I've done this for over a year now. It was just cheaper. And since the SO and I were rarely at home it just made more sense. We get our internet connection through the cable company.

16. I'd be perfectly happy with NO phone
I have phone phobia too severe to allow me to use the goddam thing, anyway. I have to carry a cell phone for work, but I don't use it unless I'm being paid to do so.
