aww... a cute baby bird story
my oldest cat, Punk, caught a baby robin this afternoon. It didn't appear hurt.

I picked up with a towel and went out in the yard. Saw two adult robins flitting around all agitated. I couldn't find the nest.

So I put the towel with the bird inside a catfood bowl and placed it up in a tree near where the parents were, and locked the cats inside.

An hour later, the little chirper was gone. Presumably Mom & Dad coaxed it back to the nest.

2. The house wren family have taken their usual summer lease.
Looks like the babies are still eggs, though.

4. Good On Ya!!

I feel compelled to comment now, during nestling season, that the old myth that birds will abandon a baby if it's been handled is just that: a myth.

If you see a baby bird on the ground, and it's in no immediate danger, leave it there and watch from a distance. Mom and dad are very likely nearby. If the little one cannot fly, they'll feed him on the ground until he is strong enough to take to his wings. Birds are usually VERY good parents.

If you have dogs or cats, now's the time to keep them inside for a few weeks until the fledglings are airborne. My Golden Retriever was crazy about birds and we had to keep a sharp eye on her every spring.

Today we found a baby juncoe (sp?) dead on the stairs. Sad. Still, the sheer numbers of birds around here bode for a good population of singers this summer.

HUGS for everyone who is kind to birds!

Oh, this is also prairie dog baby season, too. The moms are underground right now nursing their litters of babies. In a week or two we'll be up to our noogies in lil yippers!

Gotta love them dawgz!

7. Yup!
Best to leave the birdies be, if possible. I knew the parents were nearby because they were going nuts. I didn't know if they'd be able to get it back to the nest, but they evidently did - it was out of the bowl and nowhere around on the ground, and there was no more "robin excitement" in the yard.

8. I love birds.
Every so often I hear a loud "bonk" against my window, and outside I find a stunned bird.
(Usually a sparrow.)

I bring the bird in, put it in a box with some soft cloths in it until it recovers.
(Away from the cats, of course.) :-)

Then I let it go.

I have yet to have one die.

10. nuh uh...
Punk was safely locked up. We had a long talk about the inappropriateness of catching baby birds. He seemed to understand.

11. Did you beat Punk?
Edited on Thu May-27-04 02:05 AM by Squeegee
And did you beat the other cats too, just to be sure they don't try something like that themselves?
