A bicyclist riding through a crosswalk rammed into a police cruiser and injured himself Tuesday night.
According to Flagstaff police reports, the officer was waiting at a red light on Humphreys Street preparing to make a right turn onto Route 66. When the light turned green, the officer started to make his turn. He then felt a thump and saw a person go over the hood of the cruiser.
The officer stated that the 22-year-old bicyclist said he was "sorry and he had a blinking hand signal before entering, but thought he could beat it."
Deputy Chief Brent Cooper of the police department said the bicyclist had been riding on the sidewalk, which is legal. But the fact that the bicyclist was riding eastbound on the north sidewalk is illegal. Cooper said the bicyclist was riding at night without a headlamp, which is also illegal. Cooper also said the bicyclist was riding in a crosswalk, which is also illegal.
