Going to a Marine base this weekend - Any advice??
I'm a little nervous in all honesty. Scared I'm going to do something wrong and get banned for life. Soooo, HELP! (Background: I'm going to see a 'friend' I met at the beach two months ago. He came to see me Easter weekend so now it's my turn to go visit). Any words of wisdom from those of you that have visited a base?

1. Don't make any jokes
about having a bomb on your person. Unless you want your friend to do a full body cavity search...

4. I would just avoid mentioning anything political
The Marines are probably the MOST Republican and conservative of all branches of the military.

6. Do not step on the flag but for the rest they are like us.
Only as a sailors wife, at one time, he always said they were very messy on ships and only knew how to shoot guns. He had also spent many years as one.He, husband, said they taught him how to shine his shoes and in the navy he was always kidded about it.

7. on the other hand
I am a meditation instructor at a buddhist center in the DC area, and last week we had a visit from a Marine who was not only interested in Buddhism, but who clearly hated Bush.

So I would think you could venture into politics lightly. Maybe some question about having chickenhawks leading us into unneccessary wars, and do they think somebody who actually served, like Kerry, would have a better understanding of the costs of combat?

8. As a former Marine
I can tell you be prepared for a "Sausage Party". I used to hate bringing my female acquaintances near the barracks.

9. go navy!
I was a sailor for 7 years...five years active duty (over seas) and two years in the reserves...i met some really nice marine types...some cool intellegent types and lots o personality....but i met a ton of them that were knuckle dragging macho types (and proud of it too!). just treat him as an individual and don't hold his pals shortcomings against him...after all you don't really choose your chums in the military...they just kind of come with the room.

11. Bring a pair
of panties for each soldier, so no one feels left out.

You don't actually have to do anything compromising. With a pair of panties as evidence these boys will make up their own stories.
