i dont know how ibm got to the top of the mainframe/supercomputer game, whether it was heavy-handed microsoft tactics or because it's a quality machine?

6. AS/400 is not a mainframe
it's a mini.

Every AS/400 I've ever seen has an attached tape drive built in; a mainframe will have tape drives connected, but they are detachable,separate devices; same with DASD, it's also detachable/expandable.
