Say hello to Mr/Mrs Cicada
Went outside to do some planting and saw this guy/girl fly right into one the cabinets we have on our deck.

5. you don't hear these suckers singing every summer these are the 17 year
cicades...it will be one hell of a noisy summer...won't even be able to hear the birds chirping over these buggers...thank God it is only every 17 years

:) I used my digicam, a Nikon Coolpix 4500. Since he was in a shady spot, I probably should have gone with 1/60 second. I think I used 1/125 second.

The is my first sighting for this go-around (I was 10 the last time they came, so I do remember them). Although while planting stuff yesterday, I did see plenty of holes and even dug up some shells and other larvae that hadn't hatched yet (I was nice and put them back under the ground, lol)

15. How big are these things?
I don't think I've even seen one. Do they come up into the northern states and Canada?
We get cicadas, but not like these.

17. Their bofies are about 1 - 1 1/2 inches long

add the wings and you get about another 0.35 0.45 inches (?)

maybe half an inch wide (?)
