Poll question: Your favorite airline to fly?
I'm going w/ Southwest. I had a 2-hour delay on my flight to Tampa, but I really wasn't horribly bothered...

1. Never North Worse

It is terrible.
Just went on the night eye and they only had about 20 pillows and 2 blankets for the entire group of us.

56. North- Mess, you mean?
I'm surprised they had 20 pillows. That's 19 more than they had on a flight that I took from Detroit to Newark. The one pillow on the plane (mine) was taken from the flight from Raleigh, NC... God, if looks could kill, I would have been in big trouble with my blanket and pillow!

Very good service, actual meals (ok, a sandwich. But that's better than a small bag of pretzels) and the fares are ok.

13. Okay, that was not an option or I would have
certainly chosen Hawaiian Air. ;)

I chose Northwest- the hometown team. Personally, I have never had a bad experience with NWA.

I have flown Delta twice, and they were the two worst experiences I have had with an airline. Never again.

41. Lufthansa is great
I flew Chicago/Munich, and then Frankfurt/Munich/Chicago with them. They're absolutely gorgeous: incredible service, friendly fight attendants (and very hot, both genders), pretty good food - for an airline - and possibly the best in-flight exercise movie of all time. You'll have to see it to believe it - it's just too incredibly hilarious for words.

Edited on Mon May-10-04 10:44 AM by Divernan
With the exception of the Newark airport personnel, I get very good service - very helpful. I stick with them to get enough miles to qualify for "Elite" passenger card, which gets me into the priority lines through security, early boarding on the planes, no center seat guarantee, and free upgrade to first class seat if any are available.

My second choice is ATA, American Airlines' one class planes. All the seats are comfortable leather, with more leg room, and the cabin personnel usually demonstrate a good sense of humor.

49. I've generally had REALLY good luck with American.
Only 1 lost bag, and part of that was my own fault. The only late arrival I've ever had, from Calgary to DFW. I just looked at my statement today- I have over 24,000 miles! We have to go to Europe next year or something!

Continental really impressed me going the opposite way from DFW to Calgary. The stewardess could see I was keyed up (going to Calgary to see reprehensor for the first time-- he'd already been down to DFW once). I HAD to get some sleep, but find it hard to sleep on planes, and I told her why.

I was trying to likker myself up with Bailey's on the flight since we were going camping with his friends in the Kananaskis the next morning and I knew we'd be up all night catching up and....stuff.

When I went back to use the lavatory, the stewardess (ack! 'scuse me...flight attendant...) pulled 2 extra bottles of Bailey's out of her skirt, smiled, and said "Here, I thought you could use these."

No charge. That ROCKED.

14. Southwest is fucking awful
My reasons:

1) I hate the smarmy, unfunny flight attendants wearing unprofessional clothing.

2) I have NEVER, EVER had an on-time flight with Southwest.

3) They always manage to fuck SOMETHING up (ie. losing luggage, severe overbooking of flights, etc)

4) I can't stand being herded onto a plane like cattle and having to fight for a place to sit. Is it that hard to assign seat numbers?

5) SW planes seem to have smaller and less comfortable seats.

6) The worst part of this is the fact that they frequently ARE the cheapest, and I am thus forced to use them far more often than I would otherwise (which, for the record, would be never).

Ramsey and I took that flight to Boston and it was a nice airline. Plus you can upgrade to Biz Class for $35 each way. Being that we paid about $100 for the flight, that wasn't too bad of a deal. Nice big comfy seat with plenty of room.

They're o.k. -- but the nonstops from San Antonio to K.C. are a big plus. I'm expecting a grandson in June, and my daughter lives in the K.C. area, so you can bet we'll be making weekend trips from San Antonio to K.C. as often as possible to see the baby! (and our daughter... ) :-)

28. Used to fly Northwest exclusively
Because the nearest connection was only 45 miles from home.

However....too many times we ran into severe overbooking, late flights, cancelled flights, totally indifferent flight attendants and counter personnel....customer service line was about as unhelpful as you can imagine.

My son has been flying Delta for about a year now and they have been on-time, friendly, and efficient. His baggage got lost last week when he came home and the people at the desk moved heavan and earth to get his baggage to us on the next flight (1 hour, forty minutes later). They gave his discount coupons and a phone card in return for his inconvenience. Northwest NEVER apologized much less tried to compensate for inconvenience.

31. Definitely foreign carriers
British Airways and Lufthansa were both impressive when I flew them. I've also heard good things about Air Canada.

Domestically, I'll take whatever airline offers the cheapest flights to where I'm going. I did a lot of flying on Northwest when I lived in Wisconsin and they were generally pretty good. But generally I find that all of the airlines offer pretty much the same experience.

I've flown Southwest, and there is something to be said for having an assigned seat. Don't ask me why. Plus flying to BWI when you're going to DC can be a bit of a headache. I did that once on a Sunday, and it took us longer to get from BWI to our downtown DC hotel than it did for us to fly down there from NY.

Worst airline experience: Czechslovakian Air. We flew that airline in 1989 from NY to the Soviet Union. Yikes.

When I have to fly domestic, I go with United sicne they're usually cheaper, but I actually prefer American Airlines since they have more leg room. But it seems that United has been making their planes roomier. I don't feel as cramped as I used to.

53. Yep - they make a 14 hour flight feel no worse than a 2 hour United flight
I was so worried before heading to Japan about the long flight, but wow, the service on ANA is great, and roomy, and the 14-15 hours simply didn't feel like it at all.

My 5+4 hour two-leg flight on United to Hawaii was the sucks. Even my two hour flights to Chicago on United are about all I can take in terms of being cramped up and professionally ignored and made to feel like a bother for being there.
