Have you ever travelled to a 'danger spot'?

I've always wanted to go to Africa, especially Ivory Coast and Nigeria. (For the great music.) Politically, Nigeria has been a mess for years, decades. Ivory Coast had a revolt last year and continuing violence.

Have you ever travelled somewhere that was considered 'dangerous'? What were your experiences?

1. Lived in India during the Indo-Pak conflict
as a small child its a little scary but like anything else you adjust. Middle of the night sirens warning about imending attacks, violence in the street while your grandma holds you and tells you its going to be OK although her voice betrays her.

I don't recommend it.

2. I would love to go to Mozambique
I heard there is great surfing there. Biggest problem these days are the leftover landmines

3. Does Compton CA count?
I was regularly going there in 1994. If it wasn't a "danger spot," I don't know what is.

4. No, I'm talking about foreign travel.

Maybe Compton was dangerous for you, but it is in America.

5. Jammu & Kashmir in 1990
Didn't travel north of Jammu city but it was swarming with military and I had my scariest-ever travel experience there. Was taking pictures of a temple when suddenly a young man started to shout at me not to, and two dozen or so came running full speed and surrounded me. They demanded to see my passport but when they did they were very apologetic and bought me tea at a nearby stall and explained their actions. They were young Kashmiri Hindu refugees who had been violently expelled from their homes and were having a meeting on the temple grounds, which I inadvertently was about to photograph. The Kashmir Hindu Students Union, they called themselves. Knowing that you are in a position in which you might be torn limb from limb is alarming to say the least! Bombay was rather scary too, especially the chaos on arrival at the airport, but New Delhi and Madras (Chennai) quite safe-feeling and comfortable.

6. kashmir in 88, ladakh in 98
Despite the "danger spot" label, i've felt much more in danger in
american cities. That said, i was smuggled out of srinigar after
all westerners were deported through the local underground truck
driving railroad on the roof of a truck... right after zia al haq was
killed... and then 20,000 civilians died in kashmir... mysteriously..
?

I'm writing this in bucharest as i sit here right now, the ex
communist state is really lovely and i have no sense of danger despite
how they cast eastern europe as a "terrorist place". By far the
most terrorist country is the USA and your danger level is much
higher than those in the danger spots.
