I am capable of periodically becoming benevolent

My cat is basically an indoor cat, but I discovered the essence of guilt when he began peeing on various household areas hidden from easy human view. I have since quarantined him in a rather large area (larger than most apartments that humans exist in), and let him wander a reasonable distance on a leash. He seems okay with it. He has access to not only water and food, but sun and shade, and other critters.

Is this benevolent or somehow cruel? What should I do if not what I've done?
