What did Aljazeerah just load onto my hard drive?
Edited on Sun Apr-18-04 02:26 PM by spinbaby
I just went to Aljazeerah and got a sudden and unrequested download of something called "QatarAirways_freggrey_468x60_ad". It loaded itself into my desktop folder (I have a Mac) so I can't get at it. Time to get out the virus scanner?

1. Its a scan and tag file from DOJ
Ashcroft has your address now, please wait for your local FBI agents to come arrest you for anti-bush thoughts. If you could handcuff yourself it would expidite the arrest procedure.

3. The advert probably didn't know how to display in your browser
...so it downloaded it instead.

I have trouble using Safari (on OSX) at http://english.aljazeerah.net where it keeps trying to download the BreakingNews ticker instead of display it. There's probably a way to straighten it out, but I haven't gone to the trouble yet. I just keep cancelling the attempt to download the ticker instead.

There aren't many viruses for Macs in the first place (can't actually think of a single current one newer than 6 years ago), so I'd highly doubt that it's a virus. There haven't been any downloadable-thru-your-browser viruses for Macs yet that I'm aware of.

5. It's a damn popup that your browser couldn't handle...
and I have a similar problem with them.

They are using some bizarre Java code that breaks my browser-- probably code to get around popup blockers.

Of course, it could be blueprints of the Pentagon that they are hiding on your hard drive.

Napster and SETI could have given them ideas....
