2. Stop using Internet Explorer

Get Avant Browser or Mozilla Firefox.

Avant:

http://www.avantbrowser.com

Mozilla:

http://www.mozilla.org

Neither allow unsolicited pop-ups at all. IE is Microsoft garbage that rarely gets updated.

Personally, I prefer Avant. Very much like IE, but with many of the benefits of Mozilla and Opera.

3. Download the Google toolbar
I've tried five or six free popup stoppers, and none of them work better than the toolbar does. However, if you're one of those who hates Google, as my ex-wife does, try this: http://download.com.com/3000-7786-10246779.html?tag=lst-0-4

4. Freesurfer

If that doesn't fit the bill then surf on over to www.snapfiles.com . You should be able to find something there.

8. What kind of pop-ups?
if its just regular advertisement ones, then use Mozilla FireFox because it stops all except the sites you approve.

If it's Windows Messenger spam, you need to use a firewall or jsut turn off the messenger service > settings > control panel > administrative tools > services > click on messenger > turn it off

16. Beetwasher.....
i'm not trying to hijack your thread, but i need help choosing a firewall as my mcafee has expired. wasn't terribly impressed with mcafee or norton (i had to keep turning the firewall off & on) depending on which site i was visiting, it wouldn't allow graphics.

a few weeks ago there was a thread that addressed this very topic, but i can't find it now. there were some experts who had some excellent recommendations. could someone point me in the right direction?

sorry beetwasher :toast:

18. Do you have Windows XP?
if yes, just use the built in one. Some good free ones are Zone Alarm and Sygate. You can get them from download.com

I've found that all of those block just as well as the pay ones when tested with Shields Up.

Good pay ones are Norton and McAfee.

cheers

19. Stop using MIE, and start using netscape navigator, or mozilla.
They have pop up controls built in to them.

22. You might have some sort of adware installed
If you're suddenly infested with pop ups, you might have accidentally installed some adware when visiting a website or downloading something. A lot of these companies piggyback their adware onto downloads and they're a bitch to get rid of. And in the mean time they open up tons of popups. Try downloading Ad Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/, and this will remove the adware from your computer.

As far as a pop up blocker goes, try the Google toolbar.
