IMO, I feel saying your opinion of a person is lowered b/c of the way they talk is as superficial as saying some one is lower in our book b/c of the clothes they wear if they're not wearing the "upscale" clothes that one thinks that person should be wearing.

Words.

8. My opinion is that people use vulgar language for different
reasons.

Myself, when the only word that fits my emotions is HOLY FUCKING SON OF A WHORE SHIT, well, that's what I say.

O8) O8) O8) O8) O8) O8) O8) O8) O8) O8) O8) O8) O8) O8)

When the only word that fits my emotions is something else, I say that.

Vulgar is a state of mind. In some countries, it's vulgar to shake another person's right hand, or give the thumbs-up signal. It's all relative.

15. depends on the context
My boss, whose favorite word is easily "fuck," reamed the counsel to the past governor of Louisiana, and then was offended when he expressed his offense. She told me about it and she was indignant. Told me that not a single woman down there in Louisiana cusses. I got the impression that she found that a sign of ignorance.

I think it's highly unprofessional for someone in her position (lawyer/lobbyist) to use profanity at work.

As for myself, I swear entirely too much and right now I lack the energy to employ imagination and improved vocabulary in order to quit. So I say less.

21. Depends entirely upon the situation.
Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 08:51 PM by Spider Jerusalem
Nothing wrong with the occasional obscenity in an informal context to provide added verbal emphasis. Profanity has the distinct advantage of being succinct, and forceful if not overused to the point where its impact is blunted.

Besides which, the idea of "vulgar" language is rather absurd, if you know anything at all about linguistics. "Vulgar" is Latin for "common"; those terms considered "vulgar" (i.e. rude) are generally of Anglo-Saxon Germanic origin, and their status is a socio-cultural relic of the Norman Conquest of England. French, as a Romance language, is Latinate, and not Germanic, so Latinate equivalents of the "vulgar" Anglo-Saxon words came to be preferred because they reflected the speech of the ruling elite, who not only spoke French but were often educated in Latin. Hence "excrement" or "defecate" instead of "shit", "copulate" instead of "fuck", "vagina" instead of "cunt", et cetera. Bloody ridiculous, if you think about it.

(Oh, and for the record, I use quite a bit of "vulgar" language, and I'm most certainly not ignorant...)

47. As with most things, my opinion seeks balance.
I think a good expletive is an excellent way to release tension. I know there are more eloquent ways of saying a thing, but sometimes nothing lets off steam like a good "Shit!" or a well-placed "Merda!"

People who seem unable to utter a sentence without using fuck six times, on the other hand, are at least as tedious as those who judge us ignorant and undisciplined for yelling 'fuck' when we've stubbed a toe. Your mileage may vary.

55. I Find It Tedious
to listen to someone who over uses curse (or, as we say down south, cuss) words. I think it's a speech habit people fall into and it's easy to cuss up a blue streak because no thought or creativity is required.

A well-placed cuss word, when used infrequently, has much greater impact that an oft repeated string of foul language. Like anything else, when over used the desired effect is overridden by ennui.

69. It depends
You can tell those that just can't formulate a thought without using a curse. When it becomes part of their everyday vocabulary to describe things when in fact another word would be appropriate then we have a problem. Also, the use of them around children or even for whom curse words are a problem, like my mom for instance, is objectionable. I think I have heard my mom swear twice in the 36 years I have known her.

As for me, I use them in a humorous way and sometimes in anger but I try not to be too much of an
