RW looney in my local paper
Here I am checking the local suburban rag to see which of my neighbors has been arrested for DUI, and I come across a rant like this! Isn't there anywhere we can get away from the RW anymore? Isn't it bad enough that they already control the Trib and Sun-Times? I'm about to barf.

Has anyone else had an experience like this? Does it do any good to write a letter and/or call the editor and demand that this guy be pulled?

Global warming: The media falling for a tale of gloom

Sunday, January 4, 2004

Why should I believe what the newspapers tell me about global warming today, when two decades ago, they lied to me about the AIDS crisis?

If you were born before 1976 or so, you know what I'm talking about: the phony heterosexual AIDS scare of the mid-1980s.

The disease emerged in America in 1981 as one that was mainly restricted to homosexual men. In fact, it was first called GRIDS: gay-related immune deficiency syndrome.

Then a few other groups started contracting the disease. For example, drug users who employed dirty needles, and unwitting people who received a transplant of contaminated blood.

4. Using the media:
You can't answer every stupid thing that ignorant and hateful republicans put in your newspaper. Select the most important issues, and write responses to those. Get a group of 4-8 people, and take turns putting important messages in your paper every so often. Do not call an editor and request that right wing idiots be removed; rather, enjoy it when you can make your enemy squeal. Malcolm X used to say he knew he was on the right track when he made his enemies squeal.

5. Well, it's creative....
I have to admit this is the first screed on global warming I've read that is prefaced by a thinly-veiled, wingnut rant on the origin and transmission of AIDS.

I'm not sure how this columnist did in his journalism classes, but I'm guessing he got 4.0's in his creative writing classes.

6.  call the editor?
To answer your question, Unless the editor is a muzzled captive of the ownership, no it probably does little good to "demand" anything. You will be filed under the desk with incoming liberal rant.

Instead, you need to counter each argument point by point, provide the raw scientific data supporting the seriousness of global warming; show that each piece of evidence from every company-owned "scientist" and brainwashed child of every right-wing ideologue is patently false and deliberately designed to advance the profit of some polluter who finds the global warming thesis inconvenient and, get it all to fit in the space of 1.5 column inches, suitable for a letter to the editor. Will that convince the editor? Probably not.

A better question might be how do the ideologues continue to get away with the myth that media are overwhelmingly run by liberal leftists? What is the technique that continues to hold millions of their supporters in a fixed position that, if its Republican or fanatical right-wing pap, then its gospel.

Figure that out and win the media by psychosurgery award for January.

9. Here's something similar...
Not a column, though.

In my local weekly paper (the town I live in is too small to have daily paper), a guy wrote in a letter to the editor regarding the kidnapping of Dru Sjoden (happened in a town about two hours away). Anyway, he said the kidnapping was a bad thing, then esentially blamed the ACLU. My favorite quote from it was "... the ACLU is trying to keep the kinky in the streets." I was tempted to write a letter in response, but I'm sure I would be lynched for it.

After reading things like that (and the column addressed by this thread), I shake my head and wonder how anyone can be so naive.

10. Damn Liberal media is at it again.

It's pretty sad that this trash can be printed. I noticed there is no source citation for his "evidence."

I sure hope the editor gets plenty of mail on this one.

Oh, and I share you curiosity of reading the DUIs for people I know. Why do I find it so interesting?
