Newsweek article on Jon Stewart - He's on the cover page

Who's Next 2004: Red, White & Funny

The new year will bring a host of intriguing faces front and center. Politicians. Actors. Tycoons. Educators. And one fake news anchor, bravely battling pomposity and misinformation. Jon Stewart prepares for Campaign 2004

Dec. 29/Jan. 5 issue - Some people are allergic to milk. Some people are allergic to dust. Jon Stewart is allergic to liars, spinners and boasters, even pint-size ones from Ohio. "I heard Dennis Kucinich in the last Democratic debate say, 'When I'm president ... ,' and I just wanted to stop him and say, 'Dude'." So it's a little surprising that Stewart is boasting a bit himself tonight. It's a windy, frigid evening in Manhattan, and about 100 brave souls—mostly guys in baseball caps and the women who love them—have assembled to watch Stewart host "The Daily Show." Stewart—gray suit, graying hair—is onstage pumping up the crowd just before taping. "We've got us a Democratic general!" he says, clearly elated about having Gen. Wesley Clark as his guest. "That's like a gay black Republican. It's a rare beast." The audience laughs. Then, suddenly, Stewart's anti-hype radar locks on another target—himself. "I can't believe the luck you all have," he says, "because some days you come here and you get the third lead from 'Angel'."

1. Finally Catching On, Are They?
The Columbia Journalism Review has been a Stewart fan for a long time (and me, too). It's great to see him again on the cover of a major periodical!

3. isn't it interesing that they lead with a "liar/spinner" like Kucinich?
combine that with Howard Fineman's disgustingly sycophantic gushjob over Mr. Epithet's happy happy holiday, it makes you wonder what Newsweek's 'agenda' could possibly be?

wonder what they'll make of the continuing drastic decline of the dollar, the unexpected dropoff in housing starts, durable goods purchases, rise in mortgage rates, etc. (WHAT booming economy?)

or doesn't that fit their rosy election scenario?

now, to read the story and see what they have to see about Stewart's view of the WH......guessing that they'll make more of his bashing those dwarf wannabes more than our fearless leader.

4. so......looking like I'm mostly wrong:
"'The Daily Show' has much more difficulty attracting Republicans than Democrats. 'Because they're winning,' says Stewart. 'And because they've learned how to manage the message in a much more effective way.' And because comedy doesn't always sit well on guys who wear suits for a living. President Bush came off as horribly wooden the first time he did 'Letterman.' The second time, cameras caught him wiping his glasses on an executive producer's frock."

Wooden? I thought that was a word exclusively reserved for retired UCLA basketball coaches and Al Gore.

George Bush.....wooden?

took em awhile to come up witht that one.....time to re-open the boiler room.....calling Barbara Comstock

5. then, again.......who IS this writer?
does have the faintest clue as to what's going on? talk about being a member of the CW herd:

"But what will 'The Daily Show' do with a presidential contest that, post-Saddam, looks pretty dull?"

can this mean anything other than this crete thinks * wins in a highly predictable stroll through the electoral park?

or what?

and he mentions that Russert is much harder on politicians than Stewart. well, of course, he's half right on that......

6. then......why this?
last sentences of the article:

"Would he actually stick around 'The Daily Show' for the 2008 election? 'Yeah,' he says. 'Absolutely.'

Hillary Clinton, consider yourself warned."

why Hillary.....such an easy, cheap shot, just the kind that the author praises TDS for NOT making.

not surprising that a clueless hack would write this story, though, is it?

8. Mark Peyser should stick with interviewing the cast of "Friends"
He usually comes off as an idiot even when he's writing about sitcoms. Newsweek should never let him come near a topic that even tangentially involves political discussion.

7. I Can Never Find Newsweek
I've looked in the check-out counter racks and the magazine section of 3 different supermarkets - it's never there.
