The Clergy Leadership Network: The New Religious Left
12/11/2003
Albert Mohler

George Orwell once described political language as words designed "to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind." Orwell's comment comes immediately to mind when considering the formation of the new "Clergy Leadership Network," a new group of liberal religious leaders who intend to become "the Christian Coalition of the left." This group is likely to produce considerable wind in its arguments, if not in its sails.

1. I've read about the establishment of
this group, and as a liberal/progressive Christian I couldn't be more pleased and I say it's about damned time!

2. Do you know who this guy is?
He is the head of the Southern Baptist Seminary. He is quite rigid, and I blame him for being one of the men who hijacked my church. He is one of the reasons the church supported the war. He was a sweet little kid, had a lovely family.
God forgive him, he knows not what he does.

Speaking of Dr. Dean's Pharisees?

4. I did not know that. Now I understand the article in more
context. I wondered why it was rather negative.

Anyway, even though he is against it, the article makes me want to join more effectively than Mr. Mohler could imagine.

6. If Al is against it, you should be for it.
Sorry if I sound bitter, but the church in which I grew up, was pianist, dad was deacon emeritus....called me unpatriotic. They were taken over well.

3. Here you go.

SNIP..."In doing so, Mohler has put one of the final touches on the larger conservative takeover of the school's denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention.

And while critics say Mohler turned a respected seminary into a fundamentalist assembly line — forcing out theologically suspect professors and closing the school's acclaimed school of social work — he has attracted a substantial number of new conservative supporters and students....."

Conservative does not describe it. I am a deeply religious person. We had to leave this church because of their support for Iraq as a holy war. They think women should be subservient to men. They do not want women as leaders in the church at high levels.

8. If someone can put together a strong coalition of religious left people
More power to them.

Hopefully the right won't try some stealth takeover of a group like this.

9. If there is a liberal religious mainstream
and it's in the process of organising, and has a chance to bring about a soulful culture shift in this country -- well -- I just might consider going back to being a hypocritical Catholic.

Just kidding.

But a healthy dose of religious sanity is a big part of what this country needs desperately right now.

The world too.
