Gore supports Dean's agenda and would like to see Dean win. There is no writing, there is no wall. Only votes count, so if you think this 'wins' it for Dean, you are sadly mistaken. You still need to write letters, talk with neighbors, attend Meet-ups, organize with others to make sure we Get Out The Vote in a big way.

We don't win until we have the White House and Congress - we have a lot of damage we need to fix. Don't rest on the laurels of Gore. Now is not the time to take a rest.

3. Politics is as politics does

I think Gore wants to be associated with the mobilized base that has now formed around Dean. Gore wants to look like a Democrat of the Future, to ensure that he has a political career in the future. Look at Gore's moves lately, he sees what alot of people see, the democrats need to mobilize the portions of the democratic base who still care about democratic values as well as getting non-voters to the polls.

Regardless of Deans policies or politics, currently Dean is the epicenter of an activist, excited wing of the Democratic Party. Gore wants to make himself a leader amongst this group and endorsing Dean helps him do this.

The country isnt conservative, conservatives just keep winning elections. More and more democrats are realizing that the solution to thier election problems doesnt lie with trying to fight over the increasingly small current voting pool that tends to skew conservative anyways, but energizing those people who are liberal to get out and vote and become active in politics.
