The Dean Connection – NY Times Sunday magazine cover story (7 pages)
Edited on Fri Dec-05-03 06:30 PM by pruner
The (mostly) young people behind Howard Dean's campaign — the brokenhearted, the techno-utopians, the formerly apolitical — come together because they like the candidate. But they also come together because they like one another.

Quick tip for ya AmericanDem, learn how to properly use the English language before you try to be a wiseass and attack someone ok?

It just emphasizes your ignorance.

4. that was a really well-written article!
I re-read it again----that does say a lot about why I support Dean---it's the sense of community that his campaign gives us.

7. Nice one! Thanks for posting it.
I always enjoy hearing stories about the Burlington campaign headquarters and the people in it, especially the young people. Some of them are the ages of my son and older daughter.

16. Oh yeah! I have a 22-year-old son studying in Alaska,
a 20-year-old daughter studying here in Colorado at CU, and a daughter still in high school. And the dogs of course.

I have one baby that isn't born yet--a book of literary short stories that is a bit overdue, coming within the next few months from Lost Horse Press.

24. Hey that's great!
Let us know when it's done, I'll buy a copy.

Wrote a couple of books myself some years back with my husband.

Maybe we should start Authors for Dean. :)

10. I like this bit…
Dean's opponents have begun to mimic the trappings of his campaign. Many of the Democratic candidates now have blogs. Even President Bush has one, though comments from the public -- an essential element of Dean's blog -- are not allowed. The Dean campaign tracks online contributions with the image of a baseball bat (at one point, the Web site added a new bat for every $1 million raised); shortly after the Dean campaign raised its first million dollars, John Kerry's campaign took up the Web icon of a hammer. But Dean's Internet campaign dwarfs those of his rivals. In the third quarter of 2003, Kerry raised in the vicinity of $1 million online; Dean raised more than $7 million. A typical post on the Kerry blog receives, on average, 18 comments, while Dean blog posts generally receive more than a hundred. The Dean Web site is visited with roughly the same frequency as the White House Web site.

14. what a great article, thanks for keeping this kicked up
my ASU (Ariz State University) daughter went to his speech he gave on campus when the debates were held here in Phoenix and she was very impressed with him and was so excited to shake his hand. Dean seems to be able to get to the young people and make them care about their country.

Dean has a potent force in the young people he has working for him.

20. He sure does.
I have to relay a funny story--not connected to Dean. My daughter heard that someone named Ann Coulter was coming to CU. She had no interest in this, but she kept hearing talk about it because the students generally consider Coulter to be a joke. At the same time, there was some kind of porn queen who was coming to campus at around the same time.

My daughter said that the posters (with obligatory photos) announcing these two events looked so similar that she couldn't differentiate between the porn queen and Coulter!

15. Excellent article about the young folk!
I like the part about Joe Trippi bringing his leftover soup to the Internet crew.

A staffer I know in Iowa told me she was in the office one day and in walked Gray Brooks. He was the young fellow who introduced Dean's annoucement speech in June. She was thrilled to meet him.

someone on the blog is also organizing gift donations for the interns in Iowa.

I'm sure they would love to get food and/or gifts.

And maybe a couple of girls named Julie... :)

17. Ah, what a great article
Connection is the word, the feeling and the reason Dean has zoomed to the top.

For way too long, Americans have lost the connection to other Americans. It's another reason for the widespread apathy that has permeated our country. That, and a feeling of hopelessness.

In another thread, a DUer (realFedUp?) nailed it for me. Dean has the juice. His energy, decency to do the right thing, along w/being a streetfighter has people from all over the country connecting.

That is what our country needs. We need to come together as a force to save our democracy.

I love Dean's CJ! (Connecting Juice)

21. I'm going to include this with my letters
I have worked and worked to try to express in my letters to undecided voters what this article describes perfectly. It touches on everything I love about the Dean campaign and why I believe Dean has a True PURPOSE in this life and this world that transcends a job title. He is making humans human again, in a totally changed world. He is embracing the changes to improve things rather than resisting them.

I'm SO glad you posted this article. I have saved it and will print copies to distribute. It's a little long for most people to have time to read, but it also really captures you if you start reading. Love it!
