Props Please: Kohno, Stubblefield, Rubin, Wallach -- Broke Diebold story
Edited on Sat Jul-26-03 12:28 AM by BevHarris
Now please keep this kicked, because: Has anyone here really thanked these people publicly for the fantastic work they did breaking their Diebold story?

Tadayoshi Kohno, Adam Stubblefield, Aviel D. Rubin and Dan Wallach

They did the analysis. They wrote it up (no small feat, because they actually made it understandable to the layman). They put their names in public. They took the risks. They'll take the heat. They lined up the coverage in the NYT.

Anatomy of busting out an issue

Scoop Media had the guts to publish the link to those files. (I wouldn't have).

Yes, I did a bunch of research, which led to finding the ftp site and making a whole bunch of phone calls to others who visited also, and downloaded. A cadre of researchers from here and elsewhere helped us break a very good story about bypassing passwords, changing audit logs, vote overwriting and the pitfalls of using Access.

Dr. David Dill and Dr. Doug Jones weighed in right after the Johns Hopkins and Rice researchers with powerful statements, adding important fuel to the fire.

But it was THESE GUYS that made this happen. Tadayoshi Kohno, Adam Stubblefield, Aviel D. Rubin and Dan Wallach

For my own part, I am rather proud of the news pickup. The press blast in the wee hours of the morning Thursday is a key reason this is now in over 150 major news outlets. The piece was designed to generate ongoing stories, and it will.

Now, the great thing about the original "Inside an Electronic Voting Machine" article and the Sludge "Bigger Than Watergate" was that they led over 100,000 visitors to Scoop, got it slashdotted, and since he had made the link to the files available, a bunch of academics and press people got hold of them. Then it turned into a race. That access and attention turned into the story by Kohno, Stubblefield, Rubin and Wallach

To maximize pickup and set us up for the next step, I used a PR technique that we don't do often, but it worked great! I'll show you below. What it did was get reporters attention that this was an important story, and help them start making phone calls instantly.

I included contacts for the Diebold people, forcing Diebold to make public statements before they had a chance to get together on their story. They made a couple pretty bad mistakes, which we will capitalize on. After that will follow --nope, edited that out. You'll see.

============

Thought you'd like to see an unconventional press piece that worked. It is done "incorrectly" in that you usually never want more than two names at the top, especially in e-mails. The way the contact list was done here, it was almost the lead in the story. That produced shock and awe.

Even more important, that technique got reporters on the phone with Diebold, forcing public statements from them before they had their first cup of coffee.

Timing: I learned of great research paper by the fearsome four, and the NYT piece, around 9 p.m. Pacific. By 2 a.m., thousands in the press were getting fed. It went out to every political, investigative, consumer, and high tech reporter in America, newspapers, magazines, wire services, TV and radio. It started like this:

===========

BULLETIN: Electronic Voting Machines Blasted by Scientists, Hacked by Author

What follows is a set of discoveries, the result of the first-ever public examination of a secret, proprietary computer program used to count votes in 37 states. A hundred dollar item allows anyone to stuff the ballot box; remote access has been left unprotected, encryption keys have been made available to hackers, and passwords, audit logs and votes have been compromised.

CONTACTS and EXPERTS
- BEV HARRIS xxx-xxx-xxxx [email protected] (vain and probably inappropriate to put myself at the top, I know)
- DOUGLAS W. JONES, Associate Professor, The University of Iowa, Iowa Board of Examiners for Voting Machines and Electronic Voting Systems and expert congressional witness on electronic voting machines xxx-xxx-xxxx [email protected]
- DR. DAVID DILL, Electronic Voting Expert, Stanford University Dept. of Computer Science xxx-xxx-xxxx [email protected]
- KIM ALEXANDER: California Voter Foundation, xxx-xxx-xxxx [email protected]
- DAN SPILLANE - Whistleblower, a former senior test engineer who has built touch screen machines. Spillane has expertise in certification standards and legal issues -- xxx-xxx-xxxx [email protected]
- REP. RUSH HOLT: Architect of a HB 2239, a bill to require voter-verified paper trails, eliminate risky remote access to voting machines, and require proper auditing of results District office: [email protected] Washington Office xxx-xxx-xxxx
- ALISTAIR THOMPSON Publisher/Editor Scoop Media, the publication which released the 40,000 Diebold files, a bold decision which is already being compared to the release of the Pentagon Papers: ++xxx-xxx-xxxx [email protected]
- JOE RICHARDSON: Diebold official spokesman: xxx-xxx-xxxx
- ROBERT JOHN UROSEVICH (“BOB”) - Diebold Election Systems CEO: office xxx-xxx-xxxx
- TALBOT IREDALE: Diebold head programmer and a stockholder: xxx-xxx-xxxx
- SHAWN SOUTHWORTH: Official voting machine certifier for the United States (see information in article below): xxx-xxx-xxxx
- DR. BRIT WILLIAMS: Official voting machine examiner and member of NASED board that selects voting machine certifiers xxx-xxx-xxxx
- R. DOUG LEWIS: Head of “The Election Center” which organizes NASED and NASS xxx-xxx-xxxx
- KAY MAXWELL, president, League of Women Voters: Opposes HB 2239 provisions for voter-verified paper trail. (local chapters are not in agreement with national office on this) xxx-xxx-xxxx [email protected].

WHY THE BIG DEAL?

You can overwrite votes. You can vote more than once. The system is vulnerable to both inside and outside attacks. Intruders can overwrite audit logs. You can assign passwords to all your friends.

“Our analysis shows that this voting system is far below even the most minimal security standards applicable in other contexts.” -- Researchers from Johns Hopkins and Rice Universities, in paper just released: "Analysis of an Electronic Voting System" http://avirubin.com/vote.pdf

“Computer Voting Is Open to Easy Fraud, Experts Say” (New York Times, July 24 2003) http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/24/technology/24VOTE.html

These discoveries were made after examining Diebold voting system files left on an open web site, in a security breach somewhat stunning in magnitude. These files had been stored, unprotected, on a company web site for several years. The site appeared to be in continuous use, with new files added frequently, and its design invited visitors into an ftp page, which was available with anonymous access and no password...

================

(Why weren't the original four researchers on the contact list? Because I couldn't find their contact info and needed to make sure the thing hit the desks before 7 a.m. Eastern, so it had to go-go-GO, no more time to fuss with it)

I planned to have another volley out last night, but my communications were completely hacked, lost all contact with the world three times in 24 hours. I need to find my old DU emails, because we set up backups for this kind of situation, and I'll need to reactivate the backup system for press blasts now that things will start heating up.

(My system was taken out twice the first time, but 75 percent had already gone out before they got at my DSL lines).

I'm on kind of a fun romp with DemActivist right now because the last batch of invasions into my communication system left a trail of crumbs...likewise with my service provider, who set up a monitoring system that seems to have gathered a little information.

Can anyone tell me how to get at the old DU email? Or can we start over, so I can get a few back-up blasters in place? PM me on that.

2. Just caught this before I'm off to bed. It's fitting that this is
my last issue of the day because when I woke up this morning there was a lady on c-span talking about you, BevHarris, in a very excited voice. She was from Illinois, I believe, and she was talking about the scandal of the voting machines and got quite a lot out there before ol' brian cut her off!

Thanks for all that you are doing, Bev!

And good night! :-)

"Thank you" does not do justice, though you must understand that it comes from deep in our hearts. In fact you all have demonstrated what courage looks like lest we shrink back from fear and discouragement.

11. Thanks to the Fearless Foursome Researchers and their GREAT
report. It was wonderful.

And, as everyone knows, I especially liked their choice of photos to illustrate the loathesome machines, which also featured my very own loathesome Secretary of State, Ms. Cathy Cox.

But it was a great report, loved seeing that one story that featured a terrific photo of these young go-getters. Hope to see MUCH, MUCH more from them, and soon.

Hats off and Salut!

Bev, thanks for the guided tour of your PR effort on this. Most interesting. Well done, lady. You really know your stuff. But then we knew that already. And best of luck tracking those crumbs back to their source. (I hope there are laws against that, are there?)

17. Thank you Bev et al
It's been truly a wonder to watch this issue take shape and emerge from the cocoon of research and into the air-waves like the giant ugly black moth it may be - If this story can influence any of our citizens and/or representatives to be more demanding of honest voting devices and procedures, or eventually bring down the RAID can on those who've preyed on our trust and/or naivety about technology's two-sided nature, it will surely have been worth our gratitude.

I should have read this first. The above is a link to similar thread on my take in the Media Battle.

Bev is dead right Hopkins Heroes - without them we would be nowhere. And good on the NYT and Washington Post too, the reporters and the editors and the editorial boards if they had anything to do with deciding to join this race. They both have done a hell of a lot better than AP or Reuters...

Bev a question when you get in... do you know if we can expect Chicago, SF and LA to weigh in on this soon?

Afterall if its a race we need some more runners.

25. SF is coming up, and theirs isn't canned.
As you know, most of the ones that jumped on this used canned stories -- in all, there were only about 10 stories that got repeated over and over.

The next batch may prove to be more interesting, because those will be the ones where they are doing their own research.

I just sent this email off to Hopkins' Heroes

SUBJECT: Hopkins' (and Rice's) Heroes
TO: Tadayoshi Kohno, Adam Stubblefield, Aviel D. Rubin, Dan S. Wallach

Dear

Well you guys really took the bit between your teeth.

I cannot possibly express how delighted I was by your wonderful work on the Diebold DRE software. You have made my year, and possibly my decade. This was a big tough job and there was no other way to do it but fast and that is what you did.

And not only have you clearly been working your collectives off on this, but you wrote such a readable report! It is not everyday that someone succeeds in making the intricacies of computer security into a great read – understandable even by a pleb like me.

Anyways. As we say down here in NZ

Kia Kaha
(NZ Maori for stand tall…)

Alastair Thompson

New Zealand

PS you will find a huge tribute to you all from Bev Harris here…

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=82455&mesg_id=82455&page=2

PPS I do hope you do not mind my stashing an HTML version of your piece online here.

http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/HL0307/S00196.htm

When I saw your piece appear I thought it would be good to have a NZ based mirror of it ASAP. (It’s a bit of a hash to be honest… with the table seriously fuxored. I would be delighted to insert a new copy into the text if you can provide one in html.

37. Thank you all for giving me back my America
As clear as I remember watching the Kennedy assassination television at home with my Dad at age 12 where we were both home sick (my Dad stayed home sick about 6 days in his whole life) I remember the day I was sitting in Kellogg High School Library in 1967 with magazines and newspapers scattered about doing research into a paper "What would have happened if Kennedy had lived?" it hit me like a brick between the eyes that Kennedy was killed, not by a lone nut, but by powerful people in our country who disagreed with his politics. If they could do that and get away with it nobody was safe or secure. And if little old me was smart enough to figure it out a lot of people knew about it. Everything I had been taught about, even who we were was a lie. Over the years my choices have stemmed from that one moment and I thought I would not live to see the day when we might change the future for the better. But the time has come and I thank you, and my descendants thank you for stopping your lives to take on this dangerous and most important challange.

To life in a better America!

All my seven years online I have been wondering if it really would be possible to break a story this big online. And if it did start rolling like a wave.. like this one, how would it break.

Bev has an awesome handle on that stuff. And her instincts have been completely spot on every step of the way on this.

A new description of bev...

"Killer media strategist and crack investigative reporter"

Fluke! Bev and everybody have been working on this. Praying about this. Posting about this and perhaps even a little bit living about this. In steadfast hope that what is happening right now would happen.

In the UBERPOST I said this about bev but slightly muffed it with a literal...

"Bev is a tenacious investigative journalist with a soul of pure gold on the trail of the most important story since eve told adam he had no clothes on."

.. and before you say so again... Yes.. Bev the heros of hopkins' and rice - they rock too.

But sooner or later you are going to have to face it, inside a black box, you rock the most.

:)

42. Thanks -- are you going to publish an article on Hugh?
(BTW, more DU rules, don't call people out by name -- we all do it sometimes, and I was especially badly behaved once and sent Fredda on a snipe hunt...)

I'd love to see Georgia politicians have to weigh in with their official position, one by one.

44. I was thinking perhaps of posting the UBERPOST... the first one
Sorry! yet again... There are quite a lot of rules....

As a sludge column and special posting to the moon units.

But that means I will have to sub it... !!!

We have to wait for HUGH to give us the ok on the Stitching up Georgia story. And again that needs a sub. Perhaps Demactivist could have a look at it. And correct any glaring errors..

46. Can I weigh in?
Perhaps you saw my post in the other thread, which I've since edited.

Here, btw, is a link to DU rules which you may at some point want to read over: http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/rules.html There aren't that many, but it comes in handy to know the few there are.

You and Hugh got off on the subject near and dear to his heart: Ballot access. This has nothing to do with the voting machines and it's not that different in Georgia than it is elsewhere in the country, tho GA is purportedly among the worst. You may very well want to write on that subject, but my fear is that it will detract greatly from the voting machines issue if it's anywhere near those stories. I would so hate for the momentum to be disrupted with extraneous information.

Don't get me wrong, ballot access issues are the pits. A terrible scourge on our "democracy." No doubt about it. But the voting machines issues are URGENT if we're to have any democracy at all. Please stay the course!

Eloriel

47. By all means...
We are now painting a picture... all over the world frightened turd hunters are scrabbling for the interenet to try to understand what the hell is going on here..

As an external observer from a country where democracy does function it is very hard for me to get my audience - here in NZ and in Aus and the UK and Canada and everywhere else to understand the context of this story.

Ballot Access and a corrupt and dysfunctional election system are part and parcel of the same thing.

Ballot Access nightmares like Georgia's make it impossible for the issue of the voting system even to get a look in.

I expect Hugh could answer your query better on this.

So. While I can see the point you are making, for me at least Hugh's story - which I think Bev wanted me to write - fills in a big part of the picture. I expect it will for the readers too.

regards
Al

56. I enjoyed the term "PR Bunny" on another thread, obviously
intended to be dismissive - but it didn't work.

Anyway, the term brought a smile to my lips and I thought "you better not underestimate BevHarris".

Bev, the young men at the universities, the bloggers, posters, archivers, hackers...everybody!

This is one of my most important concerns...a representative democracy as per constitution. A valid vote is a requirement for freedom and all of the hard work, dedication, determination, effort put forth to help insure we are consensually governed by these ideals has my heart-felt gratitude. I haven't posted on this but I have been following it closely...my children have the links (in case they don't believe me). I have my fingers crossed hoping for an honest inquiry and a legitimate government for them and the generation after them...and the generation after them...etc.

Thank You

63. Bartcop has removed the Black Box Voting link
It would be great if they replace it with http://www/avirubin.com/vote.pdf or, since that's a pdf, Scoop's new link which has lots of the other links.
