Anyone who thinks high-stakes serve any positive purpose of a moron; teachers and parents display their astounding spinelessness and lack of concern for children by not boycotting them.
So what is the purpose of high-stakes tests? They obviously serve corporations, which gives us some clues. I think one of their main purposes is to help corporations take over what were once public schools. The tests can easily be manipulated to make students fail, inviting government takeovers. And since corporations effectively run the government...
But high-stakes tests may also be designed to dumb down students for a dumbed down economy. Who wants a lot of highly educated youths running around protesting the state of the economy, when corporations are outsourcing jobs and need service workers at home?
In this light, people should also be asking how high-stakes tests might relate to the draft. Will student performance on high-stakes tests have a bearing on their draft eligibility? Even if there's no official relation, students who don't pass high-stakes tests will be at a disadvantage in the job market and will be more motivated to follow their true corporate calling - cannon fodder.
Don't count on the National Eduation Assocation to tackle this problem; they're working for the bad guys, too.
