3. hell yes!
i invested against the dollar just like warren buffett said to do and made out like a bandit.
my latin america fund is up something like 50% this year, my russian fund made almost as much.

my u.s.-based investments did nothing.

can't go wrong betting against the chimp!

4. I most certainly am better off this year than last year
At least I've been employed all year. I spent 5 months of 2004 collecting "UnEnjoyment" while searching in vain for a job that paid as well as my previous "permanant" full-time position.

6. Unfortunately they don't have a FUCK NO! choice
Boss owes me nearly $50k in back wages. My W2 will be about 40% down from what I should have earned.

Operation Payback commences in about a week and a half when I take his company away...

10. Kudos to those who have improved themselves over last year
But for most of us, it is worse or at best no change from last year.
Even with a promotion and descent raise, I still feel squeezed more financially than last year. With cost of Gasoline and Heating bills on top of the cost of everything else going up. My dollar just isn't doing what I had hoped it would.
One can never just get comfortable to the point where I don't have to think about when the next pay day is.

My wife wanted to help out a family this Christmas who otherwise was not going to be able to buy gifts for the kids. She asked if it was OK. I looked at her and said, we will do like any other month and pull up the strings until payday at the end of the month, but to give what ever we could to help these people.

I am glad to see that some people are doing better, we have only been able to maintain the same level while I know many (too many) who have it much worse.

12. Nice post
and we should be glad for those doing better this year.
My informal poll of my cliche is no one is doing better. The costs you mention are devastating to the household budgets. Plus, the American worker is losing ground on benefits.
When I graduated from college --many years ago -- I had excellent health coverage -- dental and vision included.
Benefits have eroded to the point where people are ecstatic over what we considered minimal in past years.
Plus, I'm at an age (50) when several of my friends have lost their long-time jobs. Their companies have drastically cut back and those who have worked their way up to a certain salary level have been eliminated. Plus, the companies are leery about paying healthcare benefits for "older" workers -- nevermind these people rarely miss work.
And finding work at our ages is dismal. It's generally a step back.
More and more people are under-employed.

14. I'm marginally better off
Although, you must realize, last year was the pits. I'm not anywhere close to well off, but better than last year.
