My cousin and her husband are moving to Baton Rouge, so naturally, the subject of Katrina came up.

He (the husband) said "It's good, now we can rebuild the ninth ward the way it should've been all along, only the worst parts of town got hit"

I said "How can that be good? Thousands of people lost their lives and everything they own. It's basically ethnic clensing what you're talking about doing."

His response "Only 1,100 people died, and the death toll keeps dropping as they find out people were just missing."

I said "But thousands more are still missing."

Him "They're not missing, they're just displaced."

I then asked "So, tell me how this is a good thing again?"

Him "I'm not saying it's good that people lost everything and *some* died. What's good is - do you know what the murder rate was? 7,500 a year. Do you know what it is after katrina? 2. There have been TWO murders since Katrina - now we can finally clean that area up and invest in the land and make it the resort town it should've been."

I glared in disgust, and shook my head - then there was distraction and the topic was dropped. Later I overheard him telling my dad that he thinks he pissed me off - then they patted each other on the back about how there will be a silver lining to all this (the rebuiling of NOLA - without crime) and how the displaced people can find homes elsewhere and FEMA will help by giving them nice trailors to live in.

I refused to open my mouth again. It's not pretty when I'm drinking and I get started at family gatherings - it ends up being 20+ rethugs screaming at me, and my mother trying to pull me away. (I'm the *ONLY* reformed republican in the group).

265 murders a year in an area with population of Orleans Parish (480k + or -) is a lot. I believe it works out to just more than .7 murders a day. And it topped 400 at least once in the 90's.

is an area where the majority of homes are owned by the occupants, not rented by them. It is an area of lower middle class, working class, and working poor. It has the best work ethic in town: ninth warders are the people who make hour long commutes on public transit to work in people's homes while they raise their own families. Anyone who would make the sort of comments you describe is beneath contempt and way, way too chickenshit to ever come into Orleans to see the "progress" he celebrates.

Hmmm...Let's see, I've been here in Baton Rouge at grad school since before the hurricanes, and I think there may be a small comfort in that they are moving there. We now have a huge increase in population due to the influx of evacuees, by some sources up to 50% increase. And you know, the majority that I've personally talked to are staying in Baton Rouge permanently. That also includes many businesses that have relocated.

Point I'm trying to make is that by moving to Baton Rouge, your cousin is surrounding himself with those people he is so vocal in despising. The moment anything even close to this comes out his mouth around most people here, well the reaction by locals will be umm....unpleasant to say the least.
