By Jürgen Gottschlich

In secret discussions Washington was preparing the Allies for appropriate air strikes in 2006, agencies disclosed to day. Especially in the NATO country Turkey, speculations about an attack against Iranian nuclear facilities are taking place.

3. Repeat after me: There is no immanent war against Iran.
After Jeb gets "elected" there might be a war with Iran. But currently the US is in no position to invade another country.

Declaring war on Iran would force the Chinese to get involved, since they need the oil. Furthermore, unlike Iraq in 2003, Iran has a fully-functioning military.

Talk about invading Iran soon is hyperbolic tinfoil-hattery.

5. Meanwhile, while we are arguing over the speculation...
they (chimpco) will be creating their own realities, such as a war with Iran.

7. Funny.. the Turks claim the CIA paid them a visit
and that they were told Iran and Syria are next. Germans are reporting this too if you read the links. Seymour Hersch has been reporting for awhile that we have advanced recon in Iran and Syria, and as far as I can remember, he's never been wrong. While I agree we are in no position to invade anyone, do you really think that would stop this Administration? I'm sure they are anxious to test their new Bunker Busters. I wish I could be as confident as you, but there are too many cards on the table for me to think this is a bluff. And yes if we get into a ground war with Iran we will get our asses kicked. They have over 800,000 soldiers. Half a million of them infantry...

10. With all due respect to Hersh
With all due respect to Hersh, I don't think he's right.

To be sure, the NeoCons would like to continue their wars of aggression; but the reality is that the US does not have the money, manpower, political clout or leadership to make another war happen.

The US military has advanced recon on most countries.

19. US SOC seems to have free range tween Med and India
and there's a large Iranian expat community in the US to source native speakers from. Further, the greater Iranian space seems to be well-infiltrated by the US both covertly and via ties with a variety of power holders. It seems quite plausible to me that people are developing targeting info in-country, and that the atmospherics are being cultivated as well. I have no more information on this that the MSM provide, plus reasonable extrapolation.

20. War with Iran would be disasterous. Just what they WANT
Bush WANTS to trigger The War of the Apocalypse and usher in The End Times.

Question is: Does Bush think he is The Messiah or The Anti-Christ?

6. I can see his address to the nation now - "My fellow Americans...
A few moments ago, I ordered United States forces to strike carefully targeted sites in Iran believed to be nuclear weapons production facilities. I now have seen irrefutable intelligence that told me Iran was nearing a no-turning-back-now moment. If they were to be stopped from developing nuclear weapons that could threaten us, action had to be taken now. And it was. To the government of Iran, and to others like it, let this be a warning to you - the US reserves the right to stike where and when we deterimine a possible threat to us. To the Ameican people, stay strong - I will speak to you again when there is something you should know, talk of nothing else until then. God bless America.

they don't intend to launch a ground war,

they just want to play with their new mini nuke bunker busters and other assorted neato new gizmo's they have. They are going to bash some really big hornets nests and they don't have a clue to what the ramifications will be because they can't think that far down the line......

The Sunday Times December 11, 2005

Israel readies forces for strike on nuclear Iran
Uzi Mahnaimi, Tel Aviv, and Sarah Baxter, Washington

ISRAEL’S armed forces have been ordered by Ariel Sharon, the prime minister, to be ready by the end of March for possible strikes on secret uranium enrichment sites in Iran, military sources have revealed.

The order came after Israeli intelligence warned the government that Iran was operating enrichment facilities, believed to be small and concealed in civilian locations.

Iran’s stand-off with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over nuclear inspections and aggressive rhetoric from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, who said last week that Israel should be moved to Europe, are causing mounting concern.

The crisis is set to come to a head in early March, when Mohamed El-Baradei, the head of the IAEA, will present his next report on Iran. El-Baradei, who received the Nobel peace prize yesterday, warned that the world was “losing patience” with Iran.

31. They don't have the ground troops
First, Iran could muster up a fighting force numbering in the millions in very short order, with millions more acting as support in a guerrilla war. Israel doesn't have enough ground troops to secure a few cities in Iran, much less the entire country.

You could say we'll just bomb them with our superior air power. Then what? Iranian ground forces would rush into Iraq to wage a guerrilla war on US troops and Iraq's Shiite majority would be sympathetic to their cause.

Besides, a war with Iran would push oil prices over $100/barrel, crippling the economy of the US and every other oil-dependent nation in the world.

But IMHO, I believe Bush THINKS if he bombed Iran nuclear sites, that would be the end of it and Iran would just roll over and say George please do not bomb us again....

IMHO,, all hell would break loose if Iran was attacked... But Bush I fear has his blinders on.... :(

these morons don't look ahead and they don't listen to their generals and other experts, they've purged the cia and others to just the yes men.

It would not take Iran much effort at all to shut down every ounce of oil that passes Through the straits of hormuz......then folks we have 200 dollar a barrel oil and a worldwide economic collapse,...and that just for starters

29. AIPAC has just sent a letter to Bush on the Iranian issue...
They believe he is not being agressive enough.

There's a thread about it in I/P:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=124x108835

And for those who fear venturing into the wild world of I/P, here's a snip:

AIPAC slams Bush's Iran policy

Pro-Israel lobbying group criticizes Bush administration for reversing stance on Iran's nuclear program, failing to support bringing case before U.N.'s Security Council. New policy is disturbing and dangerous, AIPAC says in letter to Congress

American President George W. Bush's handling of Iran's nuclear program is "disturbing" and dangerous," pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC (The American Israel Public Affairs Committee) claimed this week in a letter circulated to supporters on Capitol Hill, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

The release mostly criticized the United States' willingness to accept a Russian compromise to allow Iran develop nuclear energy under Russian supervision.

AIPAC, which clashed with democratic and republican leaders in the past, has until now remained supportive of Bush and his administration, considered to be one of Israel's greatest allies.

However, the pro-Israel lobby set out to target Bush and his strategy, after the president recently reversed his stance on the Iranian issue, and decided to hold off pushing to report Iran's nuclear case to the U.N. Security Council."

30. Clark said on his blog at WesPac on Dec. 19.......
Question:
I spoke with my son in Afghanistan yesterday and was quite disturbed by some of the things that he told me about "rampant rumors" and redeployment of U.S. forces that are occurring in that country.
Do you think that Bush is gearing up to attack Iran, which we have virtually surrounded?

Answer:
Posted by Wes Clark on December 19, 2005 - 6:26pm.

There were rumors in the Mideast about something in March... I put that as a relatively low probability thus far....don't really know about the redeployments, except to suggest that the NATO forces are trying now to move throughout the country,
