Cross another RW family member off the list!
Well, I've had it. I used to just delete the tripe this idiot (my cousin) sent me; a couple of times I responded with factual, thoughtful counters to what she sent, with no response from her. I got ANOTHER one (after several months) from her tonight and I just lost it on her stupid, unthinking, freeperesque ass. Basically she was forwarding along an email that contained a bunch of pictures of smiling Iraqis with soldiers with the following text:

"These are the pictures that you will never see on the news, but that still need to be seen (especially by those anti-patriotic Americans who refuse to support what our military does)."

And here's what I wrote back:

Please stop sending me propaganda and classifying ME as "anti-patriotic" for not supporting the illegal invasion of Iraq which has NOTHING to do with the so-called "war on terror." If it was such a good cause, why did Bush have to lie about why we were going over there? Get a freaking clue and don't go down in history as one of the willfully ignorant imbeciles who supported this dictatorial, incompetant, sociopathic maniac till the end.

I am one of the most patriotic people I know. I actually WORK to preserve the ideals of my country. It is my life's work to serve my country and to PROTECT it the best way I can from those who wish to destroy our freedom--not the terrorists, but those who work from within and who are taking away our rights, one by one by one. What have YOU done to be an active citizen? It's very easy to forward an email without even THINKING about it. Have you marched on Washington? I have, and I have also marched in areas in which my cause was extremely unpopular. Do you regularly contact your senators and representatives? I do. Do you educate yourself about current events, going beyond what the teevee corporate news tells you? I do. Have you donated to charitable and political causes after evaluating what they stand for? I have. Does your career path relate to your standing as an active CITIZEN (not a mindless, apathetic consumer) of the United States? Mine does.

How DARE you call me anti-patriotic or anti-American, when I care more about the future of my own country than I do about my own future!!! THINK for yourself, and be a REAL American.

If you cannot formulate an intelligent argument, ON YOUR OWN, for still supporting this fascist regime and this illegal war, but still continue to do so, then you are a SORRY excuse for an American, and a flat-out idiot.

20. I heard the same thing at a party last night

"I am not doing anything wrong and the govt is welcome to spy on me. If it keeps us safe and they need to listen to conversations to catch terrorists, that is ok by me"

It took all I had to be polite. Perhaps the tequilla shots helped.

On the bright side everyone there hated Bush. One guy said he was furious with his wife for voting for the other guy(couldn't remember Kerry's name) but now wishes he had.

....but what will they say when the NSA snooping catches them for doing something wrong?

They may be looking for terrorists by doing this but do you really believe if they catch someone doing something else illegal, they're just going to let them go? I don't think so.........

People are not angels............everyone does something wrong at one time or another!

33. And what if they get mistaken for someone who IS a criminal
All it takes is for someone whom they've pissed off to put in a little anonymous phone call to the authorities. "I was at a party and heard Jane Smith say stuff that sounded like terrorist threats..." Suddenly, Jane's become fair game to have all of her dirty laundry sorted through by guys with dark suits, sunglasses, and crew cuts.

There is a damn good reason why the framers of the Constitution put the prohibition against warrantless searches in it, because the SHIT DESCRIBED ABOVE HAPPENED ALL THE TIME UNDER MONARCHIES, AND THEY WERE SICK AND TIRED OF IT.

Any dumbass who thinks they are somehow immune from the unchecked power they've allowed to come into their leadership should talk to someone who lived in Italy or Germany during World War II. If they still think they're untouchable, they deserve every other bad thing that happens to them.

and now that they don't need court approval to do that, that's about all it would take too!

We used to have due process in this country where the police could not search you without at least a suspicion of illegal activity..........now they don't even need that!!

And once they've got you, they can lock you up and throw away the key!! Forget about getting a lawyer.........you're not even entitled to talk to one!!

54. Speaking of your example
I'll never forget this. It was a good while back, perhaps early early this past year, I was listening to Mike Webb's show. He had a guy called in who was middle eastern. You could tell cause he had a heavy accent. He said he was out eating with someone at a restaurant and was an American citizen. I can't remember if he told if he was born here or what, but he was eating and talking to the person he was with. Later that night he was home enjoying the rest of his evening and the police came by to arrest him! They never told him why, gave him a lawyer nor a phone call. Seventy-two hours later he was released because he corporated with the authorities and there was nothing wrong. It turned out a waitress at the restaurant heard him speaking and turned him in and "thought" he was a "terrorist" because of his accent and skin color! How racists! Try to find the film "UnConstitutional" which is about the "Patriot Act." I believe you can see it at http://www.informationclearinghouse.info I'm not sure but I think you can. In it there's a story of this family who comes to America to escape their home government. I can't remember if it was Iran or Israel but I think Iran. The guy was a poilet and he was driving their president and he was having trouble with the plane. If he didn't land they all would've died. Instead of giving him a medal and making him a hero they made him quite the opposite! So he and his family fled here to America and than they opened a shop with middle eastern items and whatnot. One day they were home and asleep and the authorites (FBI) I believe came and rounded them up and put them in jail for half a year. The mother got very sick and they didn't do anything for her. The family but the father got out of jail after they called another family member who wasn't living with them to help. The dad did finally get out but they were targets because they were Arab and owned a mid east store. *sigh* So you never know when you're a target. And try to find Malloy's show at whiterosesociety.org where a caller calls in and tells about Ohio's version of the "Patriot Act." Now that's more scary than anything!!

Re >>"I am not doing anything wrong and the govt is welcome to spy on me. If it keeps us safe and they need to listen to conversations to catch terrorists, that is ok by me"<<

Don't these idiots realize they don't HAVE to be doing anything wrong? All they have to do is make the wrong person believe they are doing something wrong, even temporarily, to get hauled in as a suspected terrorist.

Or do they think that kind of thing only happens to liberals?

I have shunned my RW family ever since the 2003 invasion. They still don't "get" our differences even though I have responded like you with my discomfort of the regime they support. While I miss them, I think that I miss memories of a time long ago when I was a child. The truth is that I abore their politics and can't stand to be in their breathing room. I can't gift them because I just don't want to. Likewise, I don't accept their gifts, but that is no longer a problem. The whole gift/recieve thing doesn't work when I don't gift.

I can't gift even if I wanted to. I don't have health insurance, but I have $1700 of ER that has done NOTHING for me.

Oh well, Merry fucking Christmas.

My right-wing relatives are well-behaved; polite, even. No ranting, no raving, no Freeping, no hating. One even "came over" this year and is allegedly signed up here at DU, although he hasn't posted yet, wanting to read some of the posts first (he hasn't run away screaming in terror yet, so that's a good sign).

The only problem is that I don't get any of the barking-monkey cascade mail, stuff like "Michael Moore Wants To Ban Jesus!" sent to me and 500 of the sender's closest friends. That's an outstanding venue for counter-propaganda, though most DUers hate getting it.

Anyway, Merry Christmas, fucking or celibate. And may all your Nude Year Dreams come true, especially those that involve George Bush standing up before the SCOTUS and hearing Fat Tony (being compelled to) say "Guilty on all counts".

26. Funny, I just clicked on "send" with an email and came to this thread.
A "friend" just sent me two emails, one about overloading the ACLU mail and hopefully, shutting them down all for a cheap price of a 37 cent stamp. The second one was about the "War for Christmas".

I replied that as a member of the ACLU, I resent what she wanted to do. Then I told her the "War for Christmas" was made up the right-wingers to further divide the country and why wasn't the House of Representatives working on dire issues this country is facing. I also told her that I didn't send her letters for the impeachment of George Bush to sign.

We had never talked politics before, but she is someone I see frequently. We'll see what happens.

47. yeah, my brother saved me a lot of money tonight.
i talked to him for 3 minutes, and decided i did not need to buy 7 plane tickets to be at his wedding in july. he was trying to sell me that our nephew, a major in the special forces, was over there supplying iraqi school children with books and pencils. (i am confident that my nephew does not send out e-mail about what he is doing.) he said he doesn't read the papers, because there is no good news about what we are doing over there. i tried to tell him to back off the conversation, but he didn't. so i just passed the phone along. and decided that, yeah, i can save the money. i didn't really want to fly in the police state anyway, especially since i would be taking my bi-polar kid. (don't want to fly with her now that it would apparently be okay for the air marshals to shoot her dead.)

50. I can't believe none of them have replied so far! The "reply all" was
at least 20 people, maybe more, and I've been a little nervous about opening vitriolic emails from strangers, but NOTHING!

Maybe it's just the holidays...

51. Aw
I'm sorry. I hate what Bush has done to families across our country. :( It's so sad because family to me is so important. *sigh* :( Luckily my family doesn't talk about politics and both of my grandmother's are no longer Bush supporters (my grandmother on my Mom's side voted for Kerry but not my other one but she no longer believes Bush thank God!).

55. Hey your familiy is all you have.
My uncle is a Bush-supporting Joe-sixpack. But we agree to disagree. I hate to say it, but some people are just dumb. They were born like that. It's up to people like us to step up and take the leadership roles. Its smart people like us that should be running the country, not all these rich corrupt ass holes.

57. Yep, she's dumb. And "family" may be all I have, but some people CHOOSE
their family, remember. It is NOT worth it to waste my energy on people lik her, who have CHOSEN to remain ignorant. I put up with her shit for years and finally had enough. It's not worth it to remain "family" with someone whose beliefs are anathema to everything I stand for, and who refuses to think independently. Believe me, I have spent ENOUGH energy on that side of the family. They're the reason I haven't been home for two Christmases. They are a bunch of racist, classist (even though THEY are poor) homophobic rednecks, and would gladly have partaken in KKK activities had they had the chance. (Not necessarily this cousin, but her parents and their siblings). It's not a matter of "politics" or the simple "Republican v. Democrat" argument" of 10 years ago. These people are fascist, willfully ignorant sheep, and I have made the decision NOT to be their family anymore. If you can't understand the difficulty and pain of doing so, then you have it easy, my friend.

58. My family's not thaaaat bad, guess maybe there are just some
people that you cant deal with. I don't get people who side with the rich even though they're poor. Doesn't make sense to me.
