Ohio Patriot Act to allow Gestapo to demand "Your papers please"
Gov Bob Taft (R) is really trying to earn his 17% approval rating:

<excerpt>
A bill on Gov. Bob Taft's desk right now is drawing a lot of criticism, NewsChannel5 reported.

One state representative said it resembles Gestapo-style tactics of government, and there could be changes coming on the streets of Ohio's small towns and big cities.

The Ohio Patriot Act has made it to the Taft's desk, and with the stroke of a pen, it would most likely become the toughest terrorism bill in the country. The lengthy piece of legislation would let police arrest people in public places who will not give their names, address and birth dates, even if they are not doing anything wrong.

<snip>
"It brings us frighteningly close to a show me your papers society," said Carrie Davis of the ACLU, which opposes the Ohio Patriot Act.

Considering the wry wit of Republicans, I'm surprised they didn't name it the "Freedom to travel without harassment Act", or the "Giving Shelter To The Indigent Act".

12. I don't imagine it will hold up in a reasonable court either
But leave it to a Republican controlled statehouse to test the waters of a Police State.

"Pushing the Envelope of Authority " should be our state motto.

5. Even if this passes, could it possibly be constitutional?
I know we live in an increasingly fascist society, but last I read the US constitution, this kind of thing (arrest without probable cause and demand for such a "search" of your person to reveal identity information) would not be consistent with the bill of rights. But, hey, I am just an old-fashioned founding fathers-believing American....:mad:

7. If signed, at what point can ACLU bring a court challenge?
Do they have to wait for an "incident?"

9. The odds of me ever setting foot in Ohio just dropped
to 0.

Incidentally, how much of Ohio's economy relies on tourism?

11. I don't know how much of Ohio's economy relies on tourism, but
Since I live near Mosquito Lake in NE ohio....It doesn't sound like tourism is encouraged.
