"Kucinich: The President Is Responsible"
Responsible For The Dead And Injured US Troops, Dead Iraqi Civilians, Waste Of $250 Billion Taxpayer Money, and Failed Occupation

WASHINGTON - December 14 - Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) issued the following statement today following the President's latest speech on Iraq to the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington DC:

"The United States went to war not because of faulty intelligence, but because the Bush Administration manipulated intelligence to mislead the public and to establish a pretext to attack a nation which did not attack us.

"The President, who has given a series of reasons for the war, in his latest in a series of speeches promoting the war, now says one thousand days after the invasion, it was about getting rid of Saddam Hussein. Not about WMD's, because there were none. Not about Iraq obtaining uranium from Niger. It did not. Not about Iraq's connection to 9/11, because there was none. Not about Iraq's connection to Al-Qeada and 9/11, because there was none.

"The President now says he is responsible for the war in Iraq. I agree with the President. He is responsible. He is responsible for attacking a nation that did not attack us. He is responsible for the 2,151 American troops killed in Iraq. He is responsible for the 15,881 US troops injured in the war. He is responsible for at least 30,000 Iraqi civilians killed since the start of the war. He is responsible for draining $250 billion from US taxpayers to pay for the war. And he is responsible for the failed reconstruction and for the continued occupation.

And, my favorite part:

The United States went to war not because of faulty intelligence, but because the Bush Administration manipulated intelligence to mislead the public...

28. The truth demands action -- Impeachment
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 05:31 AM by pat_k
Wonderful to see him asserting the truth, but the truth demands action. To accuse without demanding punishment for the crimes falls short. Perhaps Kucinich will come around and lead the battle for Impeachment.

The current occupants of the executive branch are incapable of doing anything but more damage. The criminality and incompetence of this regime cannot be tolerated. That's the grim reality.

They've lied and terrorized the American people with their threats of a mushroom cloud. They occupied the executive branch based on corrupt elections incapable of serving as a measure of our consent. They've abused the power they stole. Their failures have been criminal negligence and their actions have been just plain criminal. These are dangerous people that must be disarmed now.

Many of us have long known this, but we are no longer voices in the wilderness. The nation is seeing the truth.

Facing reality demands action. We must fight for the Impeachment of Bush and Cheney. We must purge and punish their co-conspirators.

Supporting the pretense of their legitimacy by offering "plans" to them, rather then fighting for Impeachment and removal from office, is to be complicit with their actions.

We the People (currently best represented by "We the Democrats") must separate ourselves from this regime. The only way to do that is through demands for Impeachment.

Drawing a bright line between "We the People" and regime that has been acting our name leads to:

A clarity that reflects reality.

A clarity that allows us to shed the shame associated with the crimes and failures of the Bush regime.

A clarity that is simple and resonates. (e.g., "We Can’t Win" becomes "THEY Can’t Win, and we are kicking their criminally incompetent butts out")

A clarity that is powerful and right.

A clarity that creates an emotional context that allows Americans to feel good about themselves.

A clarity that is attractive because it meets so many needs.

There is power in truth, but only when coupled with action.

35. completely agree!
Dennis, or Cynthia or someone just needs to get us moving in the direction of impeachment, and see what happens. Screw the partisan bullshit. There is no law saying that republican congressman must side with Bush. The law states that they must uphold the constitution. We don't need to wait until another 'election'. We need to make all of congress show their cards before the 'election'. That is how we find out who the criminals are. After Cunningham, they should be very afraid, and some might be ready to do the right thing.

If congress even took a step toward impeachment, I think this evil regime would step down before the American public figured out the depth of their greed and crimes against humanity.

42. Yes!! The time to demand Impeachment is NOW!
Any risks they perceive -- ridicule, political suicide -- are nothing when compared to what the members of our armed services face.

We expect our soldiers, sailors, and marines to risk life and limb to preserve our Constitutional Democracy. We should expect no less from our candidates and elected officials.

I wish more people "got it." Too many respond with their belief the effort would be futile. The "futile" response takes many forms, but I always find it mystifying. Why should we sit our hands because an effort may not be successful? Sure, we could fail, but with a little leadership, "Impeach Bush" numbers could rapidly go over 70%. Members of the House – even a Republican House -- would find it tough to block serious Resolutions of Inquiry when 70 or 80% of their constituents are calling for blood.

The people hell-bent on making it a crime for a frightened women to end a pregnancy have never allowed the futility of their effort stop them. Why is it that so many people on the center/left find it so tough to just get out there and fight their battles, come what may?

We like to think of ourselves as reasonable people, but it is insane to guarantee failure with the notion "can't be done, so don't try." The notion only makes sense if you believe in your own omniscience (which is nuts).

Love Kucinich's blunt honesty, but I do wish we could get a more accurate death toll for Iraqi civilians.
It has got to be FAR beyond 30,000.

36. Kucinich just demanded that info from the whitehouse
but I don't know what happened to that post. It is on his house website though.
http://kucinich.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=37686

"Two and half years into the war the President is finally willing to discuss the appalling number of Iraqi civilian deaths. It is far past time for this sort of admission from this White House. While the President stated that about 30,000 Iraqi civilians have died since the start of the war other studies have put those figures at closer to 100,000. The Administration has a moral obligation to inform the American public of the real price of war. The Administration should immediately release all information they have on the number of civilian deaths and injuries caused by the United States’ war and occupation."

Thank you for the link. :)

Unfortunately, I'm with those who imagine that the toll is higher than 100K, especially given the estimates over a year ago being at that figure. But at least Kucinich is suggesting a six-figure toll.

Hope * doesn't go and bomb Lancet for releasing the truth. :eyes:
