Lets cut them off at the pass with 7.1 bill Bird Flu bill
Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 06:10 PM by Stop Shrub
Heres the bottom line frist (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,178358,00.html) frist is going on the air and saying that it would cost america 675 billion dollars and 2 million american lives if the bird flu made it to america. He is clearly trying to scare the shit out of us so we let him spend more of our money without paying attention to where it is going ahead of time. I make no claim to these estimates being unfounded, however i want to know why the repukes are going around scaring the shit out of middle america and pushing this 7.1 billion dollar bill before the new year.

1) We aren't in a crisis yet, why are they trying to make this seem like a few weeks will make all the difference? Why aren't we trying to really see whats going on and come up with a constructive outlined and responsive plan to combat the possible outbreak?

2) Why don't we find out exactly where that 7.1 billion is supposed to go? I know in my heart that there are some real corrupt pharmaceutical CEO's behind this legislation. Lets head them off at the pass lets find out who is gonna benefit and how exactly the repukes are getting paid off for this latest favor to corporate america.

We need to start being proactive, we can't stand by wait for this to become a scandal and then bitch about how it happened in the first place. I know there is corruption behind this, any logic minded american knows there is always an alterior motive to anything and everything the repukes try to shove down our throats. Lets find it ahead of time, lets catch them in the middle of their windup rather then playing catchup the rest of the game.

I am at work and haven't had the chance to look into this, additionally i apologize if there is another spot on the board where we are already discussing this. I just feel like with a minimal amount of effort we as a community can uncover the corruption before it goes into law and really keep the momentum up. Please someone with resources and time help me organize a section to get some research done in regards to this situation. Thanks

2. 2 million is a bit overblown
H5N1 is still relatively mild compared to H1N1 (1918 "Spanish Flu"); has no undergone a recombination event to allow direct human-human spread, and the mortality rate is still probably far below that of H1N1.
In addition, tamiflu and many other anti-viral medication has been shown to be less effective than hoped.

The best plan to deal with H5N1 is:

1)Have clear pandemic plans in order, dealing specifically with worse case scenarios relating to health care

2)Not panic.

Worse case scenario: H5N1 becomes human-human spread, high mortality, and medication doesn't help.

From what I've seen, it's unlikely. But it is a nasty flu, much more than the usually yearly strains. But I'm not panicing :)

4. not the point
we need to get together and see where money trail is leading and expose it before bill gets passed..does no one else see the validity to this idea?

3. Agree and kick
This bird flu boogie man seems a little overblown to me. All fear and no real information, give us money and get rid of that pesky posse comitatus so the Army can take over if/when it hits.

PS Wash your hands early and often :)
