Bush on the Constitution: 'It's just a goddamned piece of paper'
Bush on the Constitution: 'It's just a goddamned piece of paper'
By DOUG THOMPSON
Dec 9, 2005, 07:53

Last month, Republican Congressional leaders filed into the Oval Office to meet with President George W. Bush and talk about renewing the controversial USA Patriot Act.

Several provisions of the act, passed in the shell shocked period immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, caused enough anger that liberal groups like the American Civil Liberties Union had joined forces with prominent conservatives like Phyllis Schlafly and Bob Barr to oppose renewal.

GOP leaders told Bush that his hardcore push to renew the more onerous provisions of the act could further alienate conservatives still mad at the President from his botched attempt to nominate White House Counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.

“I don’t give a goddamn,” Bush retorted. “I’m the President and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way.”

“Mr. President,” one aide in the meeting said. “There is a valid case that the provisions in this law undermine the Constitution.”

“Stop throwing the Constitution in my face,” Bush screamed back. “It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!”

I’ve talked to three people present for the meeting that day and they all confirm that the President of the United States called the Constitution “a goddamned piece of paper.”

Although CHB has sometimes been correct, it seems to be a political gossip sheet.

doubt that bush would say such a thing? bush, a man who deserted his military unit to avoid a drug test. bush, who swore to support and defend the constitution. He just walked out the door on that oath because he had a substance abuse problem. bush and his kind care not about the constitution.

Is CHB right or does it have credibility? I don't know.

Does gwb give a fuck about the constitution? Hanging question!!

20. you just said it all.
a few months ago, some people mentioned CHB about an article that Bush was becoming insular and hiding away from people. I went over there and read it.
A lot of criticism here. no matter.
But last week, several MSM sources all agreed. It strikes me that CHB was ahead of the curve and our insults are akin to the brit physicists who scoffed at relativity in the early 1900s.

heck, even lord kelvin claimed that we knew everything about the universe.
I wonder what he would say about super symmetry, quantum physics and string theory.

I personally do not doubt that what CHB said is true. It makes too much sense, it fits what I personally learn from inside the beltway.

Unfortunately, he presents his site as a "news" site when it is in fact a political fiction site -- or, at worst, an attempt to distract, confuse or discredit Bush critics.

I recall being in DC about 20 years ago and hearing a GOP senator chatting with his aids say almost precisely the same thing on the steps of the Capital Building. How's that for "respect for the rule of law".

This is said every day by GOP types in the beltway. They hate that document, it ties their hands all the time. Well, at least it used to.

50. What stories has CHB been wrong about?
Or is it just the fact that the stories come from unconfirmed sources?

I realize stories from such sources aren't the most reliable, but are we saying there's no way this guy could pick up such information? That no GOPers ever flap their lips about what's going on in the Oval Office.

I say if you want dirt on folks, you go snoop around the back door, pick through the garbage, question the upstairs maid. It's a different kind of news. Some might be highly unreliable. But the truth can also be found in this info. The hairdressers of America probably know more about most of us than the FBI does.

it was on PBS, oh about approximately 7 or 8 years ago, and the forum was on the Constitution. A discussion on how it was not relevant for today. I remember one caller who called into the show from Canada who said if you don't want your constitution anymore, we'll take it. So you don't believe Bush thinks the Constitution is a joke? The document he has sworn as President to defend?

52. I believe he would say something like this
And I believe some staffer would repeat it anonymously for fear of reprisal. I think CHB provides a valuable service by reporting the non-traditional news (aka gossip). Just because it can't be proven as easily doesn't make it a lie. And I thought the quote about the Constitution sounded a lot like Bush.
