Oily Dog was rescued!!! This little Katrina victim is safe and sound!!!

The full story is on http://www.ericsdogblog.com

Here's the first photo that started the search (and the outrage)

Don Rorschach (Texas) was so incensed at the Dallas Reporter, who took the original pictures of the Oily Dog and didn’t pick up the dog, that he started a national awareness campaign and reward.

More from Eric:

Long ago I was contacted by Don R who wanted me to go to the actual site of the infamous picture of Oily Dog was taken and look for him. I suggested the bigger step of Don fedexing me 100 Laminated Reward Flyers to put up. I was pretty sure the dog had been rescued. I couldn’t in my wildest dreams imagine workers and others in the area really just leaving the dog to fend for himself. If one or two people were despicable enough to do so I was sure that someone equally as compassionate had come along and rescued Oily.

I had my team put flyers all around the area near where the original picture was taken. You could not get into Chalmette without seeing an Oily Reward poster. I have to admit it almost didn’t happen because of the sheer volume of calls we were getting to do rescues. But after a few days I just put it on the schedule like a rescue assignment and sent Joe and Jennifer over to put the Posters out (they were nice flyers that Don R fedexed and he even sent some big nails so I am sure they hung around for a long time)

Where Has Oily Been?

Just several days after the original picture was taken a local worker picked the dog up and delivered it to a friend of a friend named Angela Robert who is in animal control in St. Rose, LA. Angela had seen the flyers and heard of the Oily Dog on the Internet but was worried that Don R. was trying to get small dogs for various “bad” reasons or to resell.

She had someone to adopt the dog so she just went that route. However, the woman who adopted Oily turned the dog back in because she could not get it potty trained. This time Angela decided to call Don R and see what he was all about. She quickly understood that she probably had a real good guy. The bottom line is she finally approved of sending the dog to Don R. Don drove all the way to LA when no transport could be arranged. He has the dog safe in his house. Angela Robert would not accept the $2,000.00 reward for the little dog and immediately endorsed the checks to the St. Charles Humane Society in Saint Rose, Louisiana.

2. There were many false reports of Snowball being found.
Until I hear of his rescue from someone like Eric, I won't be celebrating.
God, I hope that poor baby is okay ... :(

72. Snowball wasn't found?
Suddenly I feel like someone told me there's no Santa Claus. In the midst of all the heart-breaking stories after Katrina, it felt good when we could finally see one w/a happy ending. So that little boy never did get his dog back? It's so sad.

74. There were a number of reports of Snowball having been found,
but none of them panned out -- to my knowledge. And those who are closest to the issue of animal rescue, which is still going on in NOLA, say that Snowball has yet to be found. Heart-breaking and sickening. The "authorities" (Nazis) tore that baby away from a family who loved him. And no one knows whatever happened to him.

20. that picture would have driven me to suicide. these are all pets.
they are used to people loving them. I will never understand this. I will never. ever. understand it. I would have died with my dogs. I would never have left them and if I was there, I would stuff them in my PURSE before I would have left a dog like that alone, or any other. God save us from the country we have become.

Lantos (D-CA) and Shays (R-CT) have introduced legislation so that in the future rescuers will take pets along with their owners.

For more info and other ways you can help Katrina's little victims, visit http://katrinapetsneedhelp.com

Thank you!!!

52. One of the saddest things was that they HAD guidelines for pet rescue
on the local, state and federal levels -- and ALL OF THEM failed to act. Laws are only helpful if they're implemented.

The lack of pet rescue was like FEMA to the nth degree.

55. A reminder though:
Please, please consider donating to the small groups that did SO much for the abandoned Katrina pets, rather than to HSUS, which took in tens of millions ... and did so little.

Lantos is my representative. I called his offices when the Katrina pets still had a chance. I was told of the legislation that Lantos had helped to introduce (H.R. 3538), which would benefit pets during future disasters. I asked, "What about the animal victims of Katrina? What will you do for them?" No one could give me an answer.

The government on all levels, from local to state to federal, did NOTHING. There were laws, policies and guidelines in place to help the animals, but they weren't implemented. These babies were totally abandoned. Similar to the government's abandonment of the people ... only worse.

You're right. So many furbabies were abandoned.

About a month ago, I saw a woman standing next to her car, cuddling and kissing her little dog. I had been so distraught over the abandoned babies of NOLA, that all I could do was stand and watch. I couldn't take my eyes off of this baby being loved the way I wished that they all could have been. I apologized to her for staring ... then got in my car and cried.

10. Thanks for sharing good news. The littile guy looks good.
Just when I am ready to give up on the human race I am then reminded about the acts of kindess and goodness we are capable of.

As of today I am officially feeding a little stray cat, all I see are his paw prints in the snow, heading in and out of my garage. He now has a warm nest, food and water, and nice spacious garage for cozy shelter. he is free to come and go, but we will now watch over him.

17. Last winter I fed and watered two big stray dogs but they eventually
moved out of the area. I did this for almost three months. They would sneak into my porch area and eat and drink nearly every day.....
I just couldn't let them go hungry, esp. since my Slick was a stray for 8 months before I finally managed to win him over with food and catch him in my arms.

I am such a softy for dogs like Oily....

39. I rescued this little one just the other day.
Edited on Wed Dec-07-05 10:57 AM by olafvikingr

I had been out unsuccesfully hunting for deer when my buddy and I drove by this kitten huddled in the road and not moving. It was sub-freezing and the road was covered in snow. I had my friend turn the truck around, as other vehicles drove around her, and I hopped out to check on the kitten. She didn't even move as I approached at first but then made a nice little hissing sound as I attempted to pick her up. I grabbed her and brought her back into the vehicle. I decided on the spot she was coming home with me. As we drove away, I shit you not, an entire funeral procession drove by, with at least 10 or 12 vehicles in a row. I am convinced she would have been toast. Her name is Boo Boo.

Furthermore, unknown to me at the time, my wife's grandfather had passed away that morning. Making the whole thing with the cat and the funeral procession a little weird. I think it was a good sign.

She joins the new little rescue shelter known as my home. A couple of months ago we rescued a foxhound that had been abandoned after having pups. She was in very poor health and the vet informed us she would have died without the treatment she received after bringing her in. Massive infection.

She is the pooch on the left. Her name is Sierra, next to our Cocker Spaniel Kritter.

When I asked the same question, I got this very helpful answer from GrapesOfWrath:

"You have to download the image to your computer, then upload it to an image-hosting website or a place like photobucket.com. Then you copy and paste the url into the body of your message here at DU and voila..."

I use http://www.Photobucket.com -- It's easy and Free. You just need to register.

:)

Your new foxhound looks healthy -- and very happy with her new home and cocker buddy. I've never seen such a white cocker spaniel -- gorgeous coloring!

The new kitten looks like she's been through a lot for her young age (sad little eyes). I'm glad you got her so young; it will be much easier to get her over the trauma she's been through.

Thank you for posting these great pics and for rescuing babies in need.

Eric and others are keeping up their efforts to get as many animals as possible. The pets who seemed affected the worst were the house-bound ones. Rescuers put out food-and-water stations in many parts of town, but that only helped the outdoor pets.

Eric's 11/30 blog entry claims that the rescuing and trapping will continue:

So you think animal rescue efforts are all wrapped up? We expect to recover 10,000-15,000 animals in the Gulf Region with a massive trapping program in the next 6 months. You better read and watch the video of my latest trip the the Gulf Region in the 2nd post below (scroll down).

43. The model American
The model American is socially engineered by corporate advertising and other media to be the perfect consuming machine. For many people, animals are replaceable appliances.

Sad.

48. My critters are little friends and companions, I firmly believe
that my cats and dogs think we are all one large pack, they accept each other and us humans.

They do hog the sofa, the bed and the comforter, and on occasion sneak something off my plate--and yet, I love them to pieces, they are pure fun and joy.

49. Animals
Yep, I belong to one such motley, fun-loving mixed tribe myself. The animals in my life have always been more decent and human than most people I've known...

:hi:

I think I could turn and live with animals, they are
so placid and self-contain'd,
I stand and look at them long and long.
They do not sweat and whine about their condition,
They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins,
They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God,
Not one is dissatisfied, not one is demented with the
mania of owning things,
Not one kneels to another, nor to his kind that lived
thousands of years ago,
Not one is respectable or unhappy over the whole earth.
So they show their relations to me and I accept them,
They bring me tokens of myself,
they evince them plainly in their possession.

59. And they do not try to dominate the earth, they fit in
we knock things over.

Thanks for the Whitman!

54. Before and After:
The tiny "Before" photo in the OP doesn't do this little guy's predicament justice.
It's impossible to believe that ANYONE would have passed him up:

All cleaned up and loved:

I am SO happy Oily is safe and sound. I could not live with myself if I left my doxie Molly and my kitties Moe and Maggie.

63. Did you check out the two pics in the post above yours?
That "Before" photo was incredibly devastating. How could anyone have left him?!

Roguevalley has a doxie too. (Heart-melting pic in her signature. She used to have photos of her pups tucked in bed.
VERY cute. :) )

Hugs to your babies. I could never leave mine either.

66. Brought tears and memories
Oily Dog, looks exactly like my little 10-lb Shi, KOKO, who died last year at the age of 16. I had her since she was 6-mons old and each day with her brought us joy.

I can understand that the oil workers were otherwise occuppied but how anyone specifically the reporter could not have taken a moment to put this pup in their vehicle and take her out with them is beyond my thinking. As Oily Dog walked away, holding her once fluffy tail, dragging in the oily mire, she reminded me of my KOKO, when she was tired, ill, or unhappy with us.

68. I'm so sorry you lost your baby. I wish they could be with us forever :(

I know what you mean about the reporter -- and the photographer. They knew that the city was virtually deserted.
Who did they think was going to care for this poor little thing?

:(

70. Yay! Two more saved!
So many thousands were just abandoned. It's wonderful to hear of more furbabies being rescued by kind and caring humans.
Pekingese mix? Just one fang showing. Maybe he's only half-way dangerous? :D

Great little critters!

71. They were so sweet. Scared a couple days then totally spoiled
Having around 100 people petting them and feeding them bits, they got very picky about exactly what they would eat. "cheese? no thank you, I prefer the turkey". Popeye was very silly looking, probably a small white dog/peke mix. He ruled over the doxie though, got first pick at treats.
