OK, Condi, if the US doesn't torture, why the SECRET landings?

If we are not sending detainees to other places to be tortured, even if we are not actually doing the tortuing, why are these flights and landings done in secret?

for the purpose of torturing them. A highly technical answer to the charges, and one very easy to get around. Torture is not our "purpose". But we do it anyway, as sort of a side-effect, because our purpose is to make them talk.

Your post is my thought exactly: if we're not doing something highly illegal and suspect and unethical, why do we have to take these people to other countries? Maybe because if it ever came out that we were torturing peoiple right here in the lower 48 somewhere, the outcry would be deafening?
