The background: Saturday, we had an extremely windy day in Maryland and some of my neighbor's garbage was blown over on my property, including three plastic bags with their dog's excrement in it. They were away for the weekend, otherwise they would have been over to pick it up, as they are very nice people and good neighbors.
So, anyway, I went out to pick the stuff up and noticed a small clear plastic-encased roll of paper on the driveway. All I could read was the word "MISSING" in large letters. Concerned that it might be about a dog or even a child, I picked it up and opened it. That's when I really felt dirty. It was a White Power group's propaganda - there were several pages of it in the roll, although I only looked at the first 2 pages. The first page had a photo of a blond haired child under the word "MISSING" and some verbiage about how white children were going to be missing in the school system and an imaginary school schedule - Monday - class trip to Holocaust Museum, Tuesday A Boy's Guide to Feminism (the implication on this one was that it was in intro to lesbianism), Wednesday An Appreciation of Kwanzaa (sic) Thursday Trip to Holocaust Museum Friday Latin-American Day sponsored by the Chicano Club. The second page had some very crudely drawn cartoons full of ethnic, religious and sexual stereotypes. I honestly don't know what the rest of the package contained because I threw it out.
Afterwards I was shaking I was so mad and upset. As I said to my husband, I didn't feel nearly as dirty picking the neighbors' dog poop as I did looking at that stuff. He managed to make me smile about it however by pointing out that our house was the last one on the block those people would want - we are pagans, my husband is part Cherokee, I was raised Catholic and our daughter is adopted from China.
I know these white power groups have 1st Amendment rights, but dammit, there are times you just wish that you could tell the person who dropped their abominable tracts on your property just what you think of them and their philosophies.
