California: initiative signature gatherers pimping for next year..
Edited on Fri Dec-02-05 10:45 PM by msongs
Less than a month after california voters slapped down all 8 initiatives on the CA ballot, the streets are being flooded by pimps gathering signatures for cash for initiatives for next year's various elections.

signature gatherers are paid as much as $2 per signature, collecting in public places wherever they are not booted out. The money for the sigs is paid by special interests groups of all sorts (right wing, left wing, corporate).

seems like some of these people will sell their own children into slavery for money and always try to get people to sign the petitions that make them the most per sig.

competing inititatives for next year include tobacco tax for health, keeping those pesky homsexuals from getting married, and more to come.

the signatures for cash is a pox on california. The costs of this drive up the costs of politics in an obscene way and shut out people with principles but no money.

personally i think it should be illegal to get paid for this. People who believe in a cause should be out there getting sigs because they think it the right thing to do.

1. Ballot referenda have screwed up CA
Edited on Fri Dec-02-05 10:48 PM by Ignacio Upton
The fiscal crisis that hobbled Gray Davis and led to Ahnold was partially caused by Proposition 13 and a referendum that was passed forcing 2/3rd's of the state legislature to pass a budget. Those two referendums indirectly led to the downfall of Gray Davis, because he couldn't get anything passed, and prop 13 has made it hard to pay for schools and social services, and forced other taxes to be levied.

2. These signatures should be collected by volunteers only.
This is how Davis got the boot, because Congressman Issa could pay these people to collect signatures. We need a law condemning this.

4. Why not have a ballot initiative?
I know I probably sound like a smart-ass, but I'm serious. It's the best, quickest way of changing your consitution, isn't it?

And while I don't live in CA, as a resident of Nevada, I can usually count on whatever fails the ballot initiative is in your state, coming to NV for the next election.

3. You try doing it
in 10 degree weather/in 100 degree weather and then you have a right to complain. It is democracy at it's best. You may not agree with an issue, vote it down! In Colorado it takes 68,000 sigs to get it on the ballot..not an esy feat...Have no idea how mnayit takes in CA....150,000?
I did it for 3 years..This is what paid my bills so I could work to get Bushit defeated.
