Bob Schaffer on CBS Evening News.. just did something good.
He followed the puff-piece Whitehouse steno report about how much Iraq has improved with a report with a reporter over there.. He asked her real questions! And she gave real answers! There was NEWS involved!

He is now following with a report about the behavior of the Iraqi troops. It seems pretty thorough.

3. His days are numbered. CBS is trying to re-invent the evening news
and I hear that when Katie Couric's contract with NBC comes up that she is a top choice to replace Schaffer as anchor of the Evening News.

11. Ever since she got that huge raise I've seen the life draining from her
She's no longer as genuine as she once seemed. "Money changes everything ... " I'm sure she's really glad she got that big TAX CUT, too, since she appears in interviews to be leaning more and more right.

If they want to keep doing real journalism, CBS ought to hire Aaron Brown.

8. When you read "Truth and Duty" by Mary Mapes
(or listen to it from Audible.com as I did) you may never watch CBS news again.

What a bunch of worms.

24. Just that the network didn't back her up at all, and pretty much caved to
all the right-wing pressure.

Then the investigation headed up by Dick Thornburgh sounded like a Kangaroo Court.

To me her story was very believable, and CBS didn't come off looking very good.

15. Thanks for that tip.
I've been a Premium Subscriber at Audible.com for about 3 years now, but I missed seeing that book there. I notice that it got an overall low readers rating. I also notice that some of those reviewers conveyed a lot more about themselves than about the book. One reviewer thought very highly of it, but rated it low because it was abridged. I can relate to that, but if there's no other choice, I'll go with it.

I put it in my Shopping Basket, and will no doubt order it as soon as I decide on the second book.

21. I just ordered that book ("Truth And Duty"),
along with "The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial".

The portable device I most favor for this sort of stuff, is a Sandisk 1GB DAP. It can hold ~170 hours of spoken book (or equivalent in MP3 files). And with solid-state memory rather than a HD, it's as rugged as can be. It uses just a single AAA cell, so I could take a cross-country bus-ride, with that hanging around my neck, and a bunch of batteries in my shirt-pocket.

23. It just came on late last week. I almost never buy the abridged versions,
but that's all they offered and I figured it was the only way I was going to get to "read" it.

It was pretty compelling, and I didn't notice that it was abridged.

13. I saw him ask the female reporter about the 'Iraqi secured' road to
the airport according to the pentagon, but she flat out said that 'that is not true'. She said Americans controlled that road.

17. i watched it, was confusing
i thought they were referring to the Iraqi (insurgents) by the defensive position taken by the reporter ... and at the same time wondered why they didn't want the progress noted if it were Iraqi trained army defending the road.

19. The Iraqi's WEREN'T defending the road...
She said that it is still completely under American patrol. She said that the Iraqi "army" has no chain of command, unclear loyalties and won't be anywhere near ready to "take over".. This was reported as a corrective to Rumsfeld's outrageously sunny depiction.

I guess CBS is trying something novel....telling the truth. Wonder if it will stick.

20. A troop pullout likely would be followed by mass bombing :-(
I'm listening to Seymour Hersch on DN! now and he is saying that a if troops are pulled out they will simply be replaced with an air campaign. Likely to lead to many more Iraqi deaths than today.

Glad to hear CBS is reporting. But..

22. omg i just watched it, Rumsfeld said Haifa road was under the control
of the Iraqi's----Rumsfeld failed to mention which Iraqi's and CBS pointed out that the insurgents are in charge of that area becasue they made a deal with the iraqi government so they use that area as a base to plan attacks in other parts of Baghdad.

:wow:
