Darn! WalMart boycott canceled.
Catholic League Calls Off Wal-Mart Boycott

Author: Kelly P. Kissel, AP Source: Business Week

Title: CATHOLIC LEAGUE CALLS OFF WAL-MART BOYCOTT

A Roman Catholic civil rights group called off a boycott of Wal-Mart on Friday after the world's largest retailer apologized for an employee's e-mail that called Christmas a mix of world religions.

"This is a sweet victory for the Catholic League, Christians in general, and people of all faiths," said Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, said in a statement on the group's Web site.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Thursday that a customer-service employee named Kirby had written an inappropriate e-mail to a woman who complained that the retailer had replaced a "Merry Christmas" greeting with "Happy Holidays." It also said Kirby no longer worked for Wal-Mart.

Kirby wrote that Christmas resulted from traditions ranging from Siberian shamanism to Visigoth calendars.

13. Historical truth?!
You mean white baby Jesus wasn't born in the middle east near a snowman, reindeer, and an old fat guy in a bright red suit? What kind of crazy person would believe otherwise? :sarcasm:

3. She shouldn't have been fired.
I believe that Christmas is a mix of other traditions. They should have just counseled her and told her to respond with something more PC next time. She should have just said that Wal-Mart wants to send greetings to all of their customers celebrating a holiday in the coming months.

12. Christmas is a Christian version of a Pagan holiday......
A holiday or festival that celebrated the winter solstice (shortest day of the year) and the first day of winter. However, I don't remember what the Pagans called this holiday or festival.

The Christians co-opted the holiday, started calling it the Christ mass, or Christmas for short, and voila! Eight hundred years later we have the money-crazed, commercial success that we enjoy today as the Holiday Season.

4. My personal boycott will continue.
I support companies that pay for health insurance and also pay a fair wage.

Wal-Mart does neither very well.

8. Christian psychos can't handle the truth!!!
WTF.. the guy gets fired for telling the truth? I don't care how poor you are, if you shop at Walmart you are funding pure evil.

ANd I won't even dive into the subject of Walmart's having 32 laptop computers at $379 on day after thanksgiving and allowing THOUSANDS of people line up for them only to beat the shit out if each other for those 32 machines.

11. "christmas tree" - a pagan concept co-opted by christians:

"CHRISTMAS TREE TRADITION HAS ANCIENT ORIGINS

King Tut never saw a Christmas tree, but he would have understood the tradition which traces back long before the first Christmas, says David Robson, Extension Educator, Horticulture with the Springfield Extension Center.

The Egyptians were part of a long line of cultures that treasured and worshipped evergreens. When the winter solstice arrive, they brought green date palm leaves into their homes to symbolize life's triumph over death.

The Romans celebrated the winter solstice with a fest called Saturnalia in honor of Saturnus, the god of agriculture. They decorated their houses with greens and lights and exchanged gifts. They gave coins for prosperity, pastries for happiness, and lamps to light one's journey through life.

Centuries ago in Great Britain, woods priests called Druids used evergreens during mysterious winter solstice rituals. The Druids used holly and mistletoe as symbols of eternal life, and place evergreen branches over doors to keep away evil spirits"
