NYT editors think the public schools in N.O. should never reopen

Wall Street Journal Editors: Public Schools In New Orleans Should Never Reopen

Today’s Thanksgiving-themed Wall Street Journal editorial promised to “take a respite from major policy combat and consider instead a few of the many things we’re grateful for.” It didn’t live up to its billing:

That damaged city’s public schools remain closed, but at least eight of its 35 private Catholic schools are already back teaching, less than three months after Katrina. Here’s a modest proposal to help that city’s poorest kids: Don’t reopen any of the old public schools, 102 of 117 of which were performing below the state average in any case.

There are some conservatives who honestly want to improve public schools by focusing on accountability. Others are just interested in destroying the public school system. We can safely put the editors of the Wall Street Journal in the later category.

---------------------------------

so these editors take a break from "major policy combat" to work on the continuing destruction of our public schools.

up theirs

what Katrina and Rita didn't do to kill N.O. the NYT and the bushgang will.

2. It isn't the NYT; it's the Wall Street Journal
BIG difference. This is to be expected from the conservative slant of the editorial board of the WSJ.

Here's the whole bit and a link (I bolded the REAL agenda):

Catholic schools in New Orleans. That damaged city's public schools remain closed, but at least eight of its 35 private Catholic schools are already back teaching, less than three months after Katrina. Here's a modest proposal to help that city's poorest kids: Don't reopen any of the old public schools, 102 of 117 of which were performing below the state average in any case. Make the entire city a charter and voucher testing ground, and watch the creative spirit of teachers, entrepreneurs and students start to flow.

6. Worth noting that voters have been offered this crap
ten or twelve times on refernda and have rejected it by ever increasing margins...mostly because it's been a corrupt failure everywhere it's been tried.

By the way, the Wall Street Journal ran an editorial on April 15, 1912, assuring its readers that the Titanic was only slightly damaged and chiding the panic-mongers who said it sank. Its editorial page continues to hold to that standard of accuracy and fine journalism.

8. They are an extremely good
NEWS provider, but their editorial page is a disgrace, the NYT is a crappy news provider, but the editorial page is pretty good... can we get the news department of the WSJ and the Editorial page of the NYT into one paper?

3. So
it's cheaper to build 117 more private schools than to reopen 117 public schools. That sounds like some of that fuzzy math.

4. Sounds like education as a money making enterprise regardless of
opportunity (or the lack of) for the poor and middle classes. Sounds like they want to make education on for those who can afford it. Hey, isn't that one of the reasons people came here? To get away from shit like this?

10. The deal is that some private businessmen
can get involved now and make some money - or so goes the conventional wisdom.

One of the larger charter school companies in the US is owned by the WalMart Walton family.

And frankly, I don't get it. Why these idiots think that ANY money can be made from education is beyond me. We have been screaming for years that our schools are underfunded; where is this bonanza of riches the charter school companies expect to find?
