"The Tom Delay Show" -- Bringing Down THE HOUSE! (literally)...

House GOP stumbles more with DeLay absent from leadership post

By Scott Shepard
WASHINGTON BUREAU
Thursday, November 24, 2005

WASHINGTON — The absence of U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay from the Republican congressional leadership has been noticeable in recent weeks as the GOP has stumbled in rounding up important votes in the House.<snip>

Some argue that the Sugar Land Republican has become a drag on the conservative agenda on Capitol Hill and that he should consider stepping aside from his leadership post for good. Others contend that the GOP's problems are bigger than DeLay, that they are part of a confluence of political miseries. Still others think that DeLay's problems portend an intraparty fight for control of the GOP. <snip>

"The simple fact is that the extraordinary Republican unity in the House over the last 4 1/2 years cannot be sustained in this current political and policy environment," said Thomas Mann, a congressional expert at the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank.

"(President) Bush's support is collapsing, the war in Iraq has become very unpopular, conservatives are tired of big-government spending, moderates are tired of tax cuts, and all Republicans fear that (Democratic accusations of) corruption, cronyism and the abuse of power will join the war in Iraq to threaten their majority in Congress," he said.<snip>

The "DeLay drag," as Minter described it, includes his long friendship with onetime lobbying powerhouse Jack Abramoff, now at the center of a federal investigation of alleged bribery on Capitol Hill.

Even Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform and one of the nation's most influential conservatives, acknowledged that the GOP was mired in political problems this fall: the indictments of Delay and former White House aide Lewis "Scooter" Libby, soaring gas prices, the botched federal response to Hurricane Katrina, out-of-control government spending and public discontent with the war in Iraq.<snip>

7. Fine and dandy
just one question, When we win back everything will the new people in power put things back to the way there were before the repukes got their hands on it? Thats where I question what electing people now a days will do, seems they would rather leave everything in place and change nothing the repukes had done. Notice Clinton did nothing to change anything except tax codes so the super rich took a hit at actually paying something back to we the people. But he left all of Reagans laws and de-regulations in place, so what really changed? Will the next change in power do the same or will they be willing to undo everything the repukes have done?

8. Funny how when one party has all the power this happens------
we get all the men of greed in one place but then, in either party, we do know where they are so we can sort of stay away from them. These people rob the govt. as that is were the money is, as Willy Sutton (sp) said of banks.

9. It's also funny how these people maintain the veneer of respectability...
...right up until they're disgraced. This is true on both sides of the aisle.

What's particularly odious & malodorous here is that our current "leadership" sold the American people out, after selling itself as having a monopoly on moral values.

Let's work to the end that the multi-partisan moral majority wakes up & smells the stench -- And voices its buyer's remorse at the polls.

11. Now that DeLay cannot personally arm-twist the GOP representatives
they feel more free to act and vote in accordance with the best interests of their constituents. No surprise here.

Tom DeLay controlled the GOP reps very much like an abusive father controls his children. He got what he wanted, but in the absence of his power, they begin to do what they want.

Also, no suprise, they're beginning to notice which way that ill wind is blowing. :)

Abramoff's goose is cooked and their buddy, forgot his name has pled guilty and will have to repay 19 million. That is not small potatoes.
