1. I think they're slamming Schmidt because everybody is -

not because they really care. An easy target. Easier to slam her than the fucking warmongers who got us into this mess.

She's a freshman senator, with no clout. She was likely sent out there to read that shit with the assurance that she'd be a hero to the party for it, but when it came back and bit them on the ass, the GOP was able to pretend they didn't know her. But it still got their message out to the faithful, the base. The haters and diciples of W got some red meat. Shmidt was carefully chosen to deliver that crap because she can be sent home tomorrow and no one would miss her.

Howard Fineman said today that the Republicans had some idea of what she would say before she said it. And in fact, right after she said it, DeLay himself demanded that she apologize immediately.

I guess they figured someone should say the c word and they didn't want to say it. Since mean Jean is the new kid on the block, it wouldn't be a big loss if she lost her seat over it.
