Call this what it is!

If the congress is voting on going to war or not to go to war then it is serious business. If the congress is voting on ending participation in a war or other military involvement it is serious business. But this is a non binding resolution, it has no effect on what will go on with our men and women in harm's way.

I don't care if someone voted for going or voted against going. I don't care if they now think they voted incorrectly. No representative should vote on such a mockery of our men and women in uniform. This of all things being used for perceived political gain. I truly can not think of anything more insulting and degrading to our troops in the field and those that have have bravely given their lives then what is going on with this vote.

This is inherently and completely repugnant to the it's core.

1. You're right.
This is a joke and it's an insult to those who died and to those still serving in Iraq. Our soldiers are dying everyday and the Repugs have the NERVE to waste the House's time and our tax dollars on political grandstanding. They should be ashamed of themselves! They have sunk to a new low. :grr:

6. I know the exposure is a good thing ...
but the Repugs didn't do this as a service to our country. If their intentions were noble, the resolution would be binding. This is strictly political grandstanding and under the circumstances, that's a disgrace.

However, it seems like it's blown up in their faces, doesn't it? It's prime time, it's major exposure, Murtha is kicking ass and the Repugs are using the same old "support the troops" and "dissent and debate emboldens the enemy" talking points. Perhaps a few more sheeple will wake up tonight. :D

10. Hell no they don't do it for noble reasons!
But dialogue exposes them.

3. I disagree
Mainly because this is a debate that has needed to happen for a long time now.

I also support immediate and complete withdrawl of our troops from Iraq.

4. For over two years, we have been silent. We have watched our
kids die and listened to our leaders lie every day. This is only the beginning. The drum will just get louder. Bush has no choice now. He will have to come up with a plan soon. He may be able to buy a little more time, but not much more. The clock is ticking.

7. It's Not a Mockery
Congress theoretically has the power to declare war. It's become theoretical because Congress has ceded this power to the presidency on many different occasions. It may be deplorable, but it's certainly not new to this Congress. The rut has already been worn deep.

While it would be great to see Congress pass a binding resolution, it would pretty much be unprecedented for a party out of power to be able to foist an ultimatum like this on an opposing president. I don't blame them not being able to make this happen.

The resolution is much more than political grandstanding. It changes the political equation and the psychology. It is a significant step in a more drawn-out battle of public and political opinion. As such, it may well get the troops home earlier than they would be without such a resolution.
