Heard a tasteless joke at work 3 days after diversity training...
Nancy Reagan and Ronald went to a mid-1990's fundraiser. The waiter gave Nancy a choice of entrees.

Waiter: "Would you like chicken, fish or steak Madame?
Nancy: "I'll have the fish."
Waiter: "...and for your vegetable?"
Nancy: "Oh' He'll have the fish too."

8. gosh think of the poor Reaganites that will offend
I thought it was funny. We should all laugh AT our stereotypes - it takes away their power.

11. Yes...we should laugh at people with Alzheimer's...
their stereotype is hilarious. :eyes:

Btw...people with Alzheimer's don't have any power. Its sad that I have to notify you of that.

20. Am I arguing?
Are you trying to draw me into one?

Nice eyes there. Maybe I should have stayed in Daschle mode, but that closet was too confining. He did nothing while friends around me keeled over from AIDS in their early 30s. He lived a full, well to do life, and controlled millions of other lives. I have no remorse.

30. If you feel that being disgusted by people making fun of a person
afflicted with a horrible, agonizing disease such as Alzheimer's is somehow condescending, then all I can say is......wow.

May you never have to care for a loved one with Alzheimer's.

31. He was Ninety fucking three years old!
Get a grip! WWJBB? Who would Jesus Browbeat?

As I said. He lived his priveleged life. He got lucky breaks that few people ever had, handed perks and influence just for being a movie star, and he was the most powerful man on Earth for 8 years. He will forever be immortalized with his name on freeways, navy ships, libraires, possibly Mt. Rushmore, sewage treatment plants, countless books, films, and crappy mini-series. I do not shed a tear for Reagan, or his very long, priveleged life.

Speaking of horrible, agonizing diseases, ask some of those people who came down with HIV in the 80s that St. Ron thought deserrved to get it. Oh' that's right, you can't. BECAUSE THEY ALL DIED YOUNG ON REAGAN'S HANDS...You know... the one you're crying over because he died warm and stinking rich in his bed at age 93.

I wasn't talking about Alzheimer's. The joke was about Reagan. You are out of line.

32. I would think that since you knew people who died from a disease..
that is as agonizing as HIV/AIDS is, you would understand where I am coming from.

My sympathy goes out to you for seeing friends and loved ones die. I have been there too.

33. You are coming from an assumption.
An assumption that this joke will go over just as well, if I inserted a hypotheitcal nobody like Clayton Reynolds and his wife in to it, instead of the Reagans. Once again, this is a R*E*A*G*A*N joke. Not an alzheimer's one.

I worked in nursing homes when I was young. AD is a horrible disease, but it is not a disease of the young, so the comparison to AIDS is not valid. Alzheimer's victims lived full lives before they were afflicted. It doesn't mean I'm against any cure, or sympathy for them. Ronald Reagan however...

34. Why do you feel you need to play "My disease is worse than yours"?
Also, you need to read up on Alzheimer's.

Explain to me how it was not an Alzheimer's joke?

35. Ok, it's like this.
There was this guy, and he got pushed into this political party leadership position through no effort on his own, simply because they needed a rock star candidate. Throughout his political career, he was known and rumored to be asleep for most of his public service life. Jokes about his aloofness and age were prevalent during the time. Then after he left the white house, the rumors started to fly about his mental health, especially since he was being sent up to sainthood, and that little Iran-Contra thing might taint that chance. Eventually it was reported that he was afflicted with alzheimer's. Was he? How do any of us know? Those close to him who were real.y in the know are all Republicans...the same ones who lied us into this war...something else that is killing our young.

Why am I explaining this or anything to you? Save your sanctimony for anti-stem cell research lobby.

16. I am sorry you feel that way
I certainly do not feel powerless, ever.

What gets me through the day is laughter. I am not all one thing or another. The joke was funny because it was a play on words, not because it was an attack on Alzheimers.

Being outraged and provoked and disappointed over this is beneath you; it is absolutely a given that we do not mock Alzheimers patients, but Ronny is just a famous one to give the play on words a referent.

It is not your job to notify me of anything, or to make your eyes click when they roll. Nobody here requires babysitting.

25. Excuse me, but in your first post you said we should "laugh at our..

Question: Which one was it?

27. lighten up big Tex
'kay?

It's not that big a deal - we aren't alzheimer's bigots. It was a stereotype of Alzheimers that has little to do with the reality of Alzheimers, and we know that.

You need a shot of whiskey, or at least I do. I'm off to happy hour - have a great weekend.

36. ???
Gezz lighten up. Just about everything that is joked about is a serious issue for someone. If we can't laugh at it where are we?

And I do not think the previous poster was saying people with Alzheimers have power but rather that our steriotypes do.

12. I thought that this was the really tasteless joke:
Donald Rumsfeld is giving the President his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, three Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks, "How many is a brazillion?"
