so hiLLary's going to a KKK party tonight
so says the titLe on my Latest newsmax emaiL. the emaiL header doesn't match the item's headLine, but they never do.

New York Senate hopeful Jeanine Pirro is blasting 2008 presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton for throwing a birthday party tonight for Ku Klux Klansman-turned-Senator Robert Byrd at the home of a civil rights pioneer.

"It's outrageous and shocking that Senator Clinton and her Democrat colleagues would choose Frederick Douglass' house to honor Senator Robert Byrd, who has a history of involvement with hate groups and has used racial slurs publicly," Pirro spokeswoman Andrea Tantaros told the Associated Press.

snip

As recently as 2001, the West Virginia Democrat was still using the N-word in television interviews.

Mrs. Clinton's spokesman, Howard Wolfson, defended her tribute to the longtime racist, saying Pirro's criticism was off base.

1. These people are ridiculous
Hate groups? You want to talk about hate groups? What about all these "Christian" groups that go around with their agendas on hating gay people? Byrd has changed since than and he left the group after he found out what they were about. Didn't he vote against IWR too?

7. this is such bullshit
Robert Byrd has talked openly about his remarks and association with this past life. Not only does he deeply regret his name being affliated with the Klan in any way whatsoever, he speaks out aggressively against racism.

8. Jeanine Pirro is a blatant hypocritical ass
For sure she only tells 1% of the story.

We should pay more attention to the headlines at the bottom of that article, the one that says, "Clintons Announce Opposition to Iraq War".

10. Typical sociopath rhetoric
They use the belief systems of the opponent and pervert events to try to make the "other side" seem like what the right wing is. Then they sit back and smirk when their bullied public buys their nonsense. The right is all about appearances and fake icons - they prop up false defenses of Frederick Douglas trying to obscure the genocide in Louisiana. They attack Robert Byrd for his past idiocy while absolving George Bush's grandfather for his sponsoring mass murder.

15. Surprise, surprise: NutMax is telling lies
this one in particular:

"was still using the N-word in television interviews"

Interviews, plural? It's true, Byrd did use that word in one interview, albeit not to describe anyone African American. And it was a stupid thing to say, but clearly not done out of any kind of relapse into Klan-dom.

So, they're lying.

What else can I say? It's NutMax. They're bullshit artists, and anyone who relies on them for news is to be pitied.

17. Y'see, if Byrd's name is mentioned, you HAVE to scream "KKK!"
It's in the wingnut playbook.

Every time.

Like how you have to mention Mary Jo EVERY time Ted Kennedy's name comes up.

That's what the wingnuts have--two tiresome riffs about elderly Senators.

35. You never did anything you were ashamed of?
I think the poor man has done enough to atone for the sins of his youth. Some people just can't fucking let go of it.

From his memoirs:

"It has emerged throughout my life to haunt and embarrass me, and has taught me in a very graphic way what one major mistake can do to one's life, career and reputation," the West Virginia Democrat says in his autobiography. "I displayed very bad judgment, due to immaturity and a lack of seasoned reasoning."

Republicans who worship a left-leaning, New Deal, FDR Democrat?
Ronald Reagan changed his views. So did Byrd.
Why is a Republican allowed to turn 180 degrees but not a Democrat?

39. It's worth reading Byrd's book where he talks about it...and finding
a PBS Documentary about the Klan in the South where he was at that time. It's more complicated than you think. Byrd's involvement. And, the politics of the time.

It wasn't the 1930s when Byrd filibustered the passage of the Civil Rights Act. Personally, I'll be glad when he's no longer a member of the Senate.

42. Unlike many who were like him....he has repented and tried to make
amends. I think you have to look at his whole life. He's in his 80's and that's a long time to have done much bad..along with much good and much in the middle.

His book is worth a read. There are many like the snakes in the Repug Party out there today who would fillibuster the Civil Rights Act TODAY if they thought they could overturn it. The Snakes in the Repug Party would denounce the Klan where if they didn't think they would get caught they would be organizing for White Supremacy.

Think about the Tom DeLay types and the "Federalist Society." Think about Pat Buchanan. Think about the Repugs who hide their racism while they take away rights for minorities and women in America. Think about Newt Gingrich and Zell Miller.
