Dolly Parton's version of "Imagine"
Heard her sing it on the CBS Morning Show today, while the tube was on during breakfast, morning puttering...

It's a track from her new CD of 60's/70's tunes, and to her credit, she kept all Lennon's original lyrics -- "no countries to kill or die for, no religion, too," etc.

I've always loved her roots work -- early C&W sides, her "Trio" albums, etc. But her doing this song, now, in her milieu -- that seemed unusually political for her. Will she get "Dixie Chick'd" by the corporate media stooges in the "country" music business?

And I love Dolly. She's such a humble down-to-earth southern girl. Makes me proud to be a Tennessean. I have read she is for gay rights and she is involved in early education. She teamed up with our governor (democratic) to help with the reading program that he started (every child from when they're born to age five gets a free book on their birthday). And as Jon Stewart pointed out everyone loves Dolly on all sides of the political isle.

12. She has been singing and recording all of her adult life.
Started as a teen with the great old lecher Porter Waggoner in Nashville. He was so controlling that she did not know how to get away from him. So she wrote "I Will Always Love You" and sang it to him on live TV. I saw it in the 60s sometime.
You know, the song dear Whitney "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" Houston made a ton of money on in that movie soundtrack ("Bodyguard"?).

I like Dolly's version better. Just simple yet romantic too. Not loud vocals like with Whitney. I thought Pat Benatar did "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"? Did Dolly get any money from the song since she wrote it?

Dolly made millions from "I Will Always....".

on edit:
Maybe you didn't know Brown likes to slap ol' Whitney around regularly.
Didja know Whitney is Dionne Warwick's sister?
Pat Benatar did "Hit Me.."

29. Oh really?
I wasn't positive if she was a democrat or not. I knew she did things though. From her being on the "Daily Show" I wasn't sure if she was anything from when she said she wasn't very political. One thing I like about Dolly is she doesn't let the fame and fortune get to her like it happens sometime. She still remembers her roots and where she came from. You can tell a lot by how she presents herself and treats people around her. I've never heard anything bad about Dolly. I've been living in Tennessee since 1987 so I'm sure I would've heard something by now.

I had a friend who worked for her to whom she was very kind. She is in private what she seems to be on the outside. She has a big audience in the country music field, so she has to play the margins, but she's one of us.

54. Describes herself..
as a "patriot." I don't know if she's Republican or Democratic. She says she's not protesting with her new songs, but perhaps they are good for her conscience..

I love her music, and it really is hard to dislike her whatever her affiliation is.

On a side note, that GOP Babe site sometimes errs with their choices. But they have Kim Smith documented - she voted for Bush despite watching the debates and commentary! There goes that attraction. Can you say - STUPID?

Can't stand Parton's singing. She made a "Stairway to Heaven" cover that was totally vomit-worthy. Just AWFUL.

That's what I'm saying. Her version of it is just the best one. I don't like Whitney's at all. Plus, I think sometimes people forget that it was Dolly's song first (I was brought up on Dolly and Elvis and Randy Travis, Alan Jackson and Alison Krauss so I know my country music).

My dad loves country music so when I was little that's what would be playing in the car and when my grandfather was a live we'd all go to bluegrass festivals and stuff. ;) I used to not care too much for country music but than LeAnn Rimes came along and I got more into it and now I like all types of people and love Dolly's stuff. My first ever bought record was an Elvis "Greatest Hits" cd. :D That cd is so worn out it's sad. Only like two/three songs still play. Ha.

44. "New Country" has been partly progressive for some time now
Garth Brooks has a song defending, in part, gay people in it. He also has pro-poor people songs like "The Ones the Wolves Pull Down".

Country music is roots music that comes from poor people. Willie Nelson and a lot of other people came from it. There are thick-headed Republithugs in it, but then there are also a lot of right-wing nuts like Ted Nugent in rock.

49. using Garth as an example
Here are the lyrics to "Wolves":

http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/garthbrooks/wolves.html

Here are a couple of others from his -- it's very clear he has a working class, pro-independence ethic (which is a good thing), but he's definitely not a NeoCon. If he's mainstream country, I think that speaks well for it when he's written this especially:

http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/garthbrooks/weshallbefree.html

Okay, boy have I avoided a lot of work today. I gotta go meet deadlines. :)

48. I Love Dolly
I just bought the CD Ultimate Dolly. It's a good collection of some of her earlier standards. Regarding her politics, I have read several things in the past that lead me to believe she is liberal including Aids fund raising. I saw the Daly show interview and thought that she was careful to present the non-political front to prevent cry and hue from her conservativer base fans. That may not be the right thing to do but I don't hold it against her.

I love Dolly Parton. Yikes, I'm dating myself here, but I first got to know her when The Incredible String Band covered her song "My Blue Tear."

60. I don't think Dolly gives a hoot.
Her philosophy of life is to be true to herself and her moral standards. If no one likes it, it's tough. She actually said this when she was asked why she dressed the way she did. She stated that she liked dressing like a tramp and wearing gobs of make-up. She didn't care who didn't like it. She was being herself and that's what counted.
