Howard Zinn is God
Edited on Sun Nov-13-05 12:03 PM by Tiggeroshii
Well, maybe not GOD, per say, but very good.

I'm only a couple chapters through his book Declarations, but I have so far found it distinctly profound. He's really opened up my eyes on these things -Machiavelli and such.
:D

6. Probably start with "A People's History"
Right from the first sentence you get hooked and you see immediately that Zinn did not write this to educate you; he wrote this book to make your brain do a complete 360, and to look at the world and the USA in a very realistic fashion.

It is very educational too.

5. My dad got me this one for my birthday, and I put off reading it because
of the cover. I think that was probably part of his strategy - hoping I wouldn't be interested in it so he would read it. Got to it soon enough.

....

In terms of Matt damon's comment on Good Will hunting ... I'm realizing Howard Zenn really has a way of doing that.

2004: You Can't be Neutral on a Moving Train. Offers a great background about him and his work.

From the film's website:

"This acclaimed film looks at the amazing life of the renowned historian, activist and author. Following his early days as a shipyard labor organizer and bombardier in World War II, Zinn became an academic rebel and leader of civil disobedience in a time of institutionalized racism and war. His influential writings shine light on and bring voice to factory workers, immigrant laborers, African Americans, Native Americans and the working poor.

"Featuring rare archival materials and interviews with Zinn and colleagues such as Noam Chomsky, You Can’t Be Neutral captures the essence of this extraordinary man who has been a catalyst for progressive change for more than 60 years.

"Narrated by Matt Damon and Featuring music by Pearl Jam, Woody Guthrie & Billy Bragg."
