How do you visualize one hundred people?
Or two hundred, three hundred?

Our company in navy boot camp was one hundred young men.

They all had names, Thomas, Richard, George, Robert and so on.

They also had faces, families, loved ones. They laughed when happy,

cried when hurt, bled when cut.

When the company stood in formation there might be five rows of

young men, twenty men long. There were blond hair, black hair

brown hair. There were black faces, white faces, a native American or two or more.

Now and then there might be A Chinaman, a Filipino, a Mexican. Quite a mix.

Collectively they might weigh about eight tons.

When I hear some stuffed shirt being gung-ho about sending them off,

and getting them killed in a usless war.

It pisses me off.

How do you visualize a hundred young men, and women?

1. Well said 180
They smile, they dream, they love and they die. Mostly they are used up without a thought by those who use them or benefit from their death. They are just, as you say, numbers, collections of numbers.

2. I see them as you do
or, even harder to deal with is the image of them all as children that somebody loved. They were all someone's baby at sometime. (Sorry, this mom thing does a number on your perspective--easy to see almost anyone as someone's precious baby at some time)

To see the Simian say stuff like "bring 'em on" and to see the picture you just painted so eloquently, well frankly it makes me sick.
