Interesting quote from Carter (RE: Chavez)
"The personal attacks on the president and the condemnations of America by Hugo Chavez from Venezuela, I think, are completely unjustified and uncalled for," Carter said. "Chavez is a difficult person with whom to deal personally. I know from my own experience."

or: Shown live footage of the protests, Carter said the United States' reputation in the world is as low as it's been in his lifetime and that the United States has lost its prestige, authority and influence in Latin America. He added, however, that the chief opponent to the Free Trade Area of the Americas, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, is a "demagogue."

from:http://edition.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/11/04/carter.lookback/index.html

Wonder what the chavez supporters will have to say about this.....

Even respected people like Carter have not fallen for the Chavez charm.

I would think that the term demagoue would apply to bush also! (fo rthose of you who believe that condemnation of one is support for ananother)

1. Chavez does a lot of good things in very crude ways.

I can see why people hate him.

3. I find it odd that so many of the so-called anti-Chavez posters
are newbies...is that a coincidence...?

4. I think it spells out the differences in their personalities
Carter seems to be more of an idealist, whereas Chavez is more of a realist. Carter tried to appeal to peoples intellect to get things done, Chavez apeals to their hate and hopelessness. While Chavez may be crude, he's getting the job done a lot better than Carter ever did. Who knows how things will turn out in the long term in Venezuela in the future, but for now its a lot better country than it was when he was originally elected.

6. Yes, and a majority of Venezuelans seem of approve of him.
When it comes down to things, it is the will of Venezuelans that counts, not that of the United States.

2. I would think that Carter is thinking about the office of the President
and not about the pResident.

I wish we had someone who was difficult to deal with, a demogogue AND as effective as Chavez has been.

13. they shot Huey Long
Huey would have done it. To read about Huey today is thrilling, in that he was a politition and revelled in being one, yet knew his purpose was to serve the people, especially those w/out a voice. You can't idealize Huey, because so much criticism about him was true, in a pennies/pound sense ...His idea that $1 million was the most any person could have was marvellous (Huey felt that if fortunes weren't limited by law, there be a constant race to increase them, and thus a class war state emerge; he was right)...Hugo Chavez must know about Huey Long, because his style is quite reminiscent..notice Mr Carter never mentioned the bush administrations threat to do a JFK on President Chavez, using that pat robertson doot.

5. Perhaps you should focus on the main subject of the article: * misled
us into war and that his presidency is a "radical departure". The devastating effects of the faux president is felt around the world.

Note: Have you seen the pictures of clinton walking through the crowds shaking hands with cheers of "Clinton" during his tenure at the summit VS the armed presence needed to protect bu$h. He has ruined our reputation around the world!

8. I'm sure Chavez can be quite charming, if you don't threaten him.
American foreign policy is all about carrots and sticks. Carter is a carrot bearer, but behind him is a mighty big stick. Chavez knows that, and isn't welcoming the warm and cuddly bunnies.

Beware of Easter Bunnies bearing gifts.

9. Hey Carter, can I have some of what you're taking?
I wanna be supportive of the president too!

:sarcasm:

In seriousness, Carter of all people should understand the new oil crisis. His past actions have proven him a fine humanitarian so WTF is he doing openly defending the antichrist?

10. Carter supports the FTAA...
Chavez does not. No big news here.

I would suggest that these statements DO shed a bit of light on the argument that Carter helped Chavez rig his election, though.

14. Carter might feel differently if Bush had ordered HIS assassination.
Chavez did the right thing. It probably kept him alive by keeping his profile high.
