Army probes soldier suicides

***our boys really need the UN and other nations to come in...they are under extreme stress...and they don't know when or if bush war asses have an exit plan for them....

Alarmed by the number of suicides among soldiers in Iraq, the Army has asked a team of doctors to determine whether the stress of combat and long deployments is contributing to the deaths.

"Is there something different going on in Iraq that we really need to pay attention to?" (Related story: Soldier's suicide shocks Pa. town)

In the past seven months, at least 11 soldiers and three Marines have committed suicide in Iraq, military officials say. That is an annual rate of 17 per 100,000. The Navy also is investigating one possible suicide. And about a dozen other Army deaths are under investigation and could include suicides.

Most of the suicides have occurred since May 1, after major combat operations were declared ended.

Experts say harsh and dangerous living conditions combined with a long deployment can worsen existing depression.

The Army has sent 478 soldiers home from Iraq for mental-health issues. Officials say that in previous wars, many of those cases would have been treated in the war zone. snip

1. It might also have something to do
With the fact that we have invaded a sovereign nation that posed abolutely no threat to us.

With the fact that our troops are not fighting for one thing more than profits for bu$h's cronies.

With the fact that our troops are bulldozing the trees (read: livelihoods) of innocent farmers.

With the fact that the talk of "no more Viet Nams" has turned out to be a very cruel joke!

:scared:

4. I Don't Expect An Unbiased Report
Several years ago, a Ft. Knox soldier was discovered in an isolated wooded area with 23 stab wounds. Army investegators determined it was a "suicide."

5. unbelievable
In the hours before his death, the allegedly depressed and nervous captain buried several three-point shots in a pickup basketball game, drove one of his men to the hospital, bought a 437-page book and a new set of captain's bars, called his wife to discuss bowling with friends and the purchase of a new stove, laid out his shaving gear and hung a freshly-pressed uniform at the foot of his bunk.

Yep, sounds to me like somebody planning to do himself in.

6. Similar over here in the UK
with 4 "suicides" at the Deepcut Barracks -- according to the MoD one shot himself twice in the head, an other five times in the chest.

7. Not too transparent, huh?
Amazing that washes. When I attended univeristy of Iowa we had a fottball player who stabbed a kid 5 times in a bar fight. His defense? That the kid kept on jumping on top of the knife that the football plaer was holding stationary, in a defensive posture. That didn't wash - but shooting one's self 5 times, including twice in the head? Geez, I could be an investigater for the military but that I can't stand blood.
