Nebraska Sens Hagel AND Nelson say good things about Alito (ugghhhh!)
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 06:54 PM by jefferson_dem
"I look forward to enthusiastically supporting his nomination," said Hagel, one of several senators that Alito was scheduled to meet with during the day.

While Sen. Ben Nelson did not endorse President Bush's latest nominee for the high court, he did say he was impressed by what he heard from Alito during his introductory visit.

The Nebraska Democrat, who was Alito's first senatorial host Wednesday, told reporters that he got assurances that Alito would not be "judicial activist" or "take an agenda to the bench" if confirmed to succeed Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who is retiring.

"He assured me that he wants to go to the bench without a political agenda," said Nelson, one of the founding members of the centrist "Gang of 14" senators who earlier this year worked out a compact aimed at avoiding judicial filibusters except in the direst of circumstances.

1. One COULD be generous and say that Nelson is just trying to be non-
commital at this point--HOWEVER--the headlines make it seem as if Alito is getting Dem support, and this is giving the nomination momentum.

That said, can anyone think of ANYTHING Nelson has EVER done to support the Dems? Whenever there were filibusters or parlimentary tactics, he ALWAYS didn't side with the Dems. He's voted pretty much straight Repuke his entire career. Yeah, when the Dems take the Senate back he'll be on our side so we'll have the numbers, but isn't it time to dump this turkey before he dumps us, a la Zell Miller?

2. Seems that men like these that speak out of both sides of their mouth
are far more dangerous and toxic that those who, at least you know where they stand.

These guys seem more cobra like than anything because they are such glaring opportunists. At least glaring to some of us, however they are also quite adept at passing under the radar because they've learned to read peoples' temperatures so well.

They make sure they are with those who they think are going to win. Or they just play both sides to play it safe. Nothing slimier than that in my opinion.

Except perhaps Chuck Hagels questionable wins on his OWN electronic voting machines from Election Systems and Software.

One almost wonders if they'd kick their mother if it would bring them more power or money.
