The quality of the average Freeper has decreased noticably over the past few years. Some were actually creative a few years ago, but the drivel we see in the hate mailbag is just, oh, piss poor!

You just can't find quaity Freepers any more. Why, I wouldn't be surprised if the average Freeper IQ has dropped ten points from 92 to 82!

20. It is appalling. I know high school and college students who can't write.

It is a very disturbing trend. My stepdaughter's schools do not seem to have focused on proper grammar, spelling, punctuation or verbiage. She was writing a paper and I reviewed it. I pointed out the mistakes and she said "Oh, they don't care about those sort of mistakes." I asked her mom about the situation. She told me that the students are graded on their ideas and not on the use of proper written English. I was shocked.

I attended a girl's college preparatory school. We had very high standards for writing and critical analysis skills. A comma splice or a run-on sentence caused one to receive an automatic F on a paper. Everyone took a year of Latin in 8th grade. We read the classics from 7th grade on. In 7th grade we read both Romeo and Juliet and Oedipus Rex. In the highly touted (i.e. mostly white) public high school in the wealthy, conservative Georgia county where I work, the students do not read Shakespeare until 11th grade.

How can young people learn to write if they don't read and critically analyze the great works of literature?

I am constantly asked at work to edit important emails for coworkers. I can understand a missing comma here or an apostrophe there but when I am confused about actual content because words are misused and tenses are wrong - when I read "sentences" that are not really sentences - I feel very alarmed.
