Bush and moves to liberalize free trade across the planet began gathering Tuesday for a "People's Summit" protest being held ahead of the fourth Summit of the Americas.
Arriving in busses and minivans at the seaside resort of Mar del Plata, the demonstrators gathered at a drab concrete sports complex kilometers (miles) from the summit site, waving flags emblazoned with the Communist hammer and sickle and pictures of Che Guevara, the famed Argentine revolutionary.
"This is a chance for the real people to hold their own summit," said Wayra Aru Blanco, a 33-year-old Ayumara Bolivian Indian, beating a calfskin drum as brightly dressed South American Indian women played reed flutes.
Organizers expect thousands of protesters to head to Mar del Plata in coming days for their own version of a summit, airing grievances against the war in Iraq, free trade they say enslaves Latin American workers and a host of other issues. They are hoping to attract 50,000 people for the highlight of their event, a protest Thursday as Bush arrives on Air Force One.
