I know what I want
A full-scale Congressional investigation.

While I appreciate the work the Grand Jury has done, there comes a time when the secrecy of such a jury is not in the interest of the people. A Congressional investigation would throw light in the dark corners now hidden from our view. A Congressional investigation would be public record.

2. I want one for the run up to the Iraq invasion.
Thw whole cha-cha, starting with the "war games" that moved Centcom to the ME, and all the bullshit lies about Saddam.

5. Maybe that's not best right now
We should have already seen an investigation by the Senate committee on intelligence, but this has been blocked by Republican chairman Pat Roberts. Phase 1 of this committee's investigation looked into the collection of intelligence in the runup to the invasion of Iraq. The White House's role was specifically excluded from this scrutiny, however, with a promise from Roberts to look at this aspect separately in phase 2, after the 2004 election. Ranking Democrat Jay Rockefeller objected to this handling of the investigation by Roberts.

Phase 1 ended up being little more than a whitewash, with the CIA being predictably set up as a scapegoat. Roberts broke his promise to conduct phase 2, saying this year that it would be "a waste of time." There has never any congressional scrutiny of the White House's role in the runup to the war in Iraq.

John Poindexter and Oliver North were convicted of crimes committed in the Iran-contra scandal. These convictions were vacated on appeal because of immunity agreements with the Senate concerning their testimony. These agreements were highly questionable, particularly since neither Poindexter nor North implicated anyone but themselves.

No doubt with this specifically in mind, Fitzgerald has asked Congress not to conduct hearings that would paralell his investigation. I have no doubt that Roberts would be eager to grant immunity to a number of individuals, if phase 2 or any similar hearings would occur.

Let's win back the Senate next year, and have our Congressional investigation after that.

9. Can you explain to me how a congressional committee
is HONEST, efficient, and would truly get to the 'heart of the matter'? Please cite recent examples of such proficieny.

11. Sure. Nixon.
Nixon actually wanted a Grand Jury to look at Watergate so that the details could be hidden from the public. It was the Congressional Investigation which opened it up to the public and which ultimately led to Nixon's resignation.
